Advertised recently in Wanderlust, our new itinerary ‘Tracks to Mandalay’ traces a route from Bangkok across the border to lesser-visited regions of southern Burma and travels north through this fascinating country to Mandalay and nearby hill stations.
TRACKS TO MANDALAY
PRIVATE JOURNEY – 21 DAYS – From £4,475
Thailand and Burma are similar in many ways – both exotic, friendly countries that combine exquisite ancient sites with breathtaking natural beauty. Using the region’s rail networks, this journey begins in Bangkok ending in peaceful Hsipaw high in Shan State. In-between, there is a train ride to Kanchanaburi – location of the Bridge over the River Kwai – before heading to southern Burma with stays in Dawei, colonial Mawlamyaing and Kyaiktiyo. After time in Yangon, take the rustic overnight train to Mandalay, then to Maymyo ending with a rail crossing over the spectacular Goitek Viaduct.

FOOTHILLS OF THE HIMALAYAS
PRIVATE JOURNEY – 15 DAYS – From £2,715
From the magnificent Golden Temple of Amritsar, heart of the Sikh religion, to the quintessentially British hill station of Shimla, this tour incorporates the best of India's beautiful and the evocative Himalayan foothills. Stop en-route in the colourful Tibetan enclave of Dharamsala, home of the exiled Dalai Lama, nearby Palampur and Pragpur, a small heritage village located close to the Kangra Valley. Ample time is included to enjoy Shimla and the surrounding valleys before returning by train to Delhi for an exploration of both historic Old Delhi and Lutyens planned Raj-era capital.
PRIVATE JOURNEY – 16 DAYS – From £4,125
An alternative take on a classic journey, this itinerary introduces the traveller to a side of Burma that few others see. Using Mandalay, Bagan and Inle Lake as centres, visits are made to the Padah-Lin Caves famous for their prehistoric painting and Stone Age remains, the Kyaukgu Umin. ‘Rock Cave Tunnel’ reached by boat from Bagan and the Pindaya cave complex which is home to over 8,000 Buddha images. From Pindaya continue to Kalaw then take a day trek to beautiful Inle Lake before ending the journey in remote and little-visited Loikaw.
