A tiny land–locked state in the high Himalayas, the one airport in the far west of the country, and one main west–east road, means that for the time–conscious visitor the central valleys remain the limit of exploration. This tour aims to offer the intrepid traveller a chance to travel through the whole of Bhutan to rarely visited parts of the country and exiting by land into India at the eastern border town of Samdrup Jongkhar.

Starting in Kolkata, fly to Paro, home of the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery and drive onto the capital, Thimphu. From here cross the spectacular Dochu–La Pass to the glacial valley of Gangtey, home of the rare black–necked crane, continuing onto Punakha, the site of an awe–inspiring Dzong.

This five night itinerary is an excellent introductory, non-strenuous, trek in Bhutan. The trek can also be used as a base from which to further explore this little-visited country with possible extensions, at its conclusion, by car onto Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang.
