THE LAND OF GENGHIS KHAN
Day 1 Depart London Heathrow
Fly with British Airways non-stop to Beijing.
Day 2 Arrive Beijing
Arrive into Beijing and proceed by car to the Xinqiao Novotel Hotel,
ideally located close to the Forbidden City, where you will stay
overnight. (N)
Day 3 Beijing to Ulaanbaatar – by air
This morning you will be met and transferred back to Beijing Airport
in good time to catch your onward flight to the Mongolian capital of
Ulaanbaatar. On your arrival in Ulaanbaatar you will be met and
transferred to a central hotel where you will stay overnight. (B)
Day 4 Ulaanbaatar to Shiveegobi – by train
Shiveegobi to Ikh Nart – 60kms
After breakfast, leave Ulaanbaatar for the full day train ride to East
Gobi (Dornogobi) Province. Follow the Trans-Mongolian Railway line in
the direction of China through a gradually changing landscape of treeless
steppe grassland to the drier Gobi plains. Disembark at Shiveegobi and
continue by 4x4 to the Red Rock Valley of Ikh Nart where you will stay
for the next two nights at the small Red Rock Ger Camp. (B/L/D)
Day 5 Ikh Nart
Today explore this dramatic, rocky Gobi landscape and view the many
species that live here. The area is home to an abundance of wildlife
including Argali Sheep, the world’s largest wild sheep, Siberian
Ibex, wolves and lynx, Asiatic Wild Ass and the Mongolian Gazelle.
Ikh Nart is also known for its population of Cinereous Vultures –
the largest vulture of Eurasia. (B/L/D)
Day 6 Ikh Nart to Gun Galuut
This morning leave Ikh Nart and drive north to the Herlen River, making
use of the few tarmac roads present in Mongolia. From here continue onto
Gun Galuut Nature Reserve where you will stay overnight in Tented
Accommodation. This afternoon, enjoy birding around the surrounding
small lakes and marshlands which are home to the rare Whitenaped Cranes
and Swan Geese. (B/L/D)
Day 7 Gun Galuut to Toson Hulstai
Today continue east into Hentii Province passing the small capital of Öndörhaan and traversing the classic grasslands that are so characteristic of the Eastern Steppes into Dornod – Mongolia’s easternmost province. The herding communities become scarcer and more isolated as you drive through Toson Hulstai Nature Reserve to the Campsite which will be your base for the next two nights. (B/L/D)
Day 8 Toson Hulstai and the Eastern Steppes
Today explore a region famous for its immense Gazelle herds. Although sometimes
elusive, it is not uncommon to encounter herds of ten thousand or more.
There will also be time for hiking and birding. (B/L/D)
Day 9 Toson Hulstai to Olziyt Hairhan
This morning drive north towards the Onon River, a tributary of the mighty Amur
River crossing back into Hentii Province where the scenery changes from the
undulating grasslands to small ridge mountains of birch forest – traditionally
the start of Siberia. Continue onto the dramatic rocky landscapes of sacred
Ölziyt Hairhan and your Campsite which will be your base for the next three
nights. (B/L/D)
Day 10 Ölziyt Hairhan and the Onon River
to
Day 11
Over the next two days hike and explore this beautiful area – homeland
of the Halh, Dadal and Buryat communities and, it is alleged, the birthplace
of Genghis Khan. Fishing can also be arranged. (B/L/D)
Day 12 Ölziyt Hairhan to Öglögchiin Wall
Today drive west through Bayan-Adraga and Binder until the Almsgivers,
Öglögchiin, Wall which borders the large Khen Khentii Special Protected Area,
a forested wilderness three times the size of Yellowstone. Continue onto the
Campsite for your two night stay. (B/L/D)
Day 13 Öglögchiin Wall
Located within the Batshireet community, Öglögchiin Wall is an archaeological
wall (more than two metres wide and three metres high as its highest) which
skirts through the forests for more than 3kms towards Mount Daichin. It is also
here that archaeological expeditions have searched for the grave of Genghis Khan
– unfortunately with little success. (B/L/D)
Day 14 Öglögchiin Wall to Ulaanbaatar
Today leave Öglögchiin and return by car to Ulaanbaatar and your Hotel where you
will stay overnight. (B/L)
Day 15 Ulaanbaatar to Beijing – by air
This morning it is an early start to transfer to Ulaanbaatar Airport in good time
to catch your onward flight to Beijing. On your arrival you will be met and transferred
back to the Xinqiao Novotel Hotel where you will stay overnight. (B)
Day 16 Depart Beijing
Today transfer back to Beijing Airport to catch your British Airways flight home
to London Heathrow Terminal Five. (N)

Prices vary according to selected airlines, hotels and season, however, an indication to the current cost of this itinerary is from £3,850. All prices are per person and are based on a minimum of TWO persons travelling together and sharing a twin bedded room with meals as indicated.
