HIGHLIGHTS OF GUJARAT

Day 1 London Heathrow to Mumbai
Fly with British Airways non-stop to Mumbai.

Day 2 Mumbai
Arrive into Mumbai in the early hours where you will be met and transferred by car to the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel which stands facing the Gateway of India in the historic Colaba district of the city. Later visit the Gateway of India, built to commemorate the visit of George V in 1911, the Prince of Wales Museum, the historic Fort area of the city and Malabar Hill with its superb views over the city. End at Mani Bhawan, a small museum celebrating Gandhi’s links with Mumbai, and the colourful Dhobi Ghat where the city’s linen is washed. (B)

Day 3 Mumbai to Ahmedabad – by air
This morning return to Mumbai Airport to catch your onward flight to Ahmedabad. On your arrival you will be met and transferred to the centrally located boutique heritage hotel House of Mangaldas Girdhardas for a two night stay. (B)

Day 4 Ahmedabad
A fascinating city, today take a guided heritage walk around the old quarters of the city. Explore the beautiful havelis, temples, mosques and mausoleums ending at the finely carved 15th Century Jama Masjid. Visit the Gandhi Ashram and Adalaj step well in the afternoon. (B)

Day 5 Ahmedabad to Dasada – 260kms
This morning leave Ahmedabad wit your driver and guide and proceed to Dasada stopping en-route at the 11th Century Sun Temple at Modhera and Patan – home to Patola, one of the richest silk textiles in the world and an 11th Century step well. Later visit some of the settlements around Dasada. Stay for two nights at the eco-friendly Rann Riders Camp located on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch. (B/D)

Day 6 Dasada
Safari to the Little Rann of Kutch – the best birding here is over the winter months from October to March – with the numbers and variety of birds, from plovers and chats to flamingos and storks, particularly astonishing. Time is also spent in the villages including pastoral Vadiara, the silk-weavers of Dasada and the goat-herders of Ambala. (B/L/D)

Day 7 Dasada to Bhuj – 260kms
After a final early safari drive to Bhuj and the Prince Hotel where you will stay for the next two nights. (B)

Day 8 Bhuj
Today visit the Banni villages, north of Bhuj, home to the Hindu pastoral tribes of the Ahirs and Rabaris as well as the Islamic pastoral groups that include the Muthwas and Jaths. (B)

Day 9 Bhuj to Gondal – 260kms
Leave Bhuj and drive to Gondal, a fascinating town and one of the most progressive and affluent states during the period of British rule. Stay for two nights in Gondal at the Orchard Palace. (B/D)

Day 10 Gondal
At leisure – places of interest include the Naulakha Palace with its impressive Durbar Hall and the Vintage Car Museum which is arguably one of the finest in India. (B/L/D)

Day 11 Gondal to Sasan Gir – 150kms
via Junagadh

Drive south from Gondal to the town of Junagadh famous in Gujarat for its ancient Uparkot Fort, Gothic Palaces and flamboyant 19th Century mausoleum complex. Afterwards continue onto the Lion Safari Camp at Sasan Gir, the last remaining home of the Asiatic lion. (B/D)

Day 12 Sasan Gir
An attractive sanctuary, Sasan Gir is not only home to Asiatic lions but also nilgai, sambar, chital and a rich variety of birdlife. Today enjoy early morning and evening jeep safaris in this unique park. (B/L/D)

Day 13 Sasan Gir to Palitana – 227kms
After a final morning safari drive onto Palitana which is home to an extraordinary Jain temple complex. The hills of Palitana are known as the ‘Abode of the Gods’ and it is of little surprise that the 863 temples attract many pilgrims. Stay overnight at the Vijay Vilas Palace a small and basic heritage guesthouse. (B/D)

Day 14 Palitana to Bhavnagar – 203kms
Bhavnagar to Mumbai – by air

This morning you may wish to join the pilgrims on their 4,000 step ascent to the Palitana temples. Later drive onto Bhavnagar where you will then continue by air to Mumbai. Stay overnight at the Leela Kempinski Hotel ideally located close to Mumbai Airport. (N)

Day 15 Depart Mumbai
Depart Mumbai on the British Airways flight to London Heathrow Terminal Five.

STAYING ON

Relax on the beaches of Goa or Kerala – both easily reached by air direct from Delhi. With a range of hotels to choose from both locations offer something for everyone and are an excellent way to end a tour. Time in Kerala could also be extended with a cruise on the backwaters.

Prices vary according to selected airlines, hotels and season, however, an indication to the current cost of this itinerary is from £3,600. All prices are per person and are based on a minimum of TWO persons travelling together and sharing a twin bedded room with meals as indicated.
