CRUISING ON THE MIGHTY BRAHMAPUTRA
Operated by the Assam Bengal Navigation Company
The RV Charaidew and her sister RV Sukapha are the only cruise boats to operate on the Brahmaputra, a once a much-used river highway but now a deserted haven for bird life and river dolphins. Known for the National Parks that border the river, there are also temples, tea gardens and numerous tribal villages to explore. So far from civilisation, do be prepared for rough roads, scrambles up riverbanks, navigational problems and delays, however, the reward will be to discover an untouched land of charming people and beautiful landscapes. The cruises are named after the Assam Despatch paddle steamer service which once carried passengers and mail from Kolkata to the furthest frontiers of Assam.
The Assam Bengal Navigation Company offers a variety of cruises and detailed sailing schedules are available on request - or please visit www.assambengalnavigation.com. We can tailor-make your complete itinerary to include any cruise and other regions of India with Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Tezpur are all connected by air from Delhi, Kolkata or Bagdogra.
Both ships provide 12 generous-sized twin-bedded cabins, air-conditioned with en-suite shower and WC. All cabin accommodation is on the upper deck, as is a bar and viewing area. A dining room is on the lower deck, while a top sundeck offers additional open-air seating and sun lounges. Food on board is a mixture of Assamnese and continental. The Brahmaputra runs for some 2,900kms from its source in the Himalayas to its delta in the Bay of Bengal and these cruises will certainly appeal to those who wish to witness the diverse cultures and marvellous wildlife of Assam.
