TRIBAL ORISSA

This itinerary is designed to coincide with the market days in tribal Orissa.

Day 1 London Heathrow to Kolkata (Saturday)
Fly with British Airways non-stop to Kolkata.

Day 2 Kolkata (Sunday)
Arrive into Kolkata in the early hours of the morning where you will be met and transferred by car to the Oberoi Grand Hotel. Remainder of day at leisure to rest and acclimatise. (B)

Day 3 Kolkata (Monday)
Today tour this fascinating city by car. Full of holy men, gurus and street temples, Kolkata has been called the ‘soul’ of India. (B)

Day 4 Kolkata to Vizag – by air (Tuesday)
Fly to Vizag, otherwise known at Visakhapatnam, in northern Andhra Pradesh and one of India’s most modernising cities. Vizag is famous for its three hills each dedicated to a different religion with the Hindu Venkateswara Temple on the Venka-Teswa Konda, the Muslim mausoleum of the saint Baba Ishaq Madina on the Darga Konda and the Roman Catholic Church on Ross Hill. Stay overnight at the Taj Residency Hotel. (B)

Day 5 Vizag to Jeypore – 340kms (Wednesday)
Today leave Vizag and visit the Borra caves and Arraku enroute to Jeypore. Stay fore two nights at the Hello Jeypore Hotel. (B/D)

Day 6 Jeypore (Thursday)
Today from your base in Jeypore explore the local area. Visit the lively village of Onukadeli whose market is attended by the Bonda and Gadaba tribes and which is famous for its locally produced clay pottery. In the evening return to Jeypore. (B/D)

Day 7 Jeypore to Rayagada – 220kms (Friday)
This morning leave your hotel in Jeypore and visit the Kunduli market (Friday only) which is frequented by the local Mali and Paroja tribes. The weekly Kunduli market is one of the largest markets in the region and it is here that you will find the greatest concentration of the fascinatingly beautiful Mali and Paroja tribes. Later continue on to Rayagada visiting villages enroute to stay overnight at the Sai International Hotel. (B/D)

Day 8 Rayagada to Taptapani – 160kms (Saturday)
This morning leave Rayagada and proceed to Taptapani, famous for the very hot sulphur springs. Visit Sudha Saora and the Desia Kondh villages, before continuing onto Taptapani where you will stay for one night at the Tourist Bungalow. (B/D)

Day 9 Taptapani to Puri – 260kms (Sunday)
Today leave Taptapani and visit the Kutia Kondh tribe and a local weaving village before continuing onto Puri, home to the Jaganath temple. Stay for four nights at the Hans Cocoa Palms Hotel. (B/D)

Day 10 Puri (Monday)
This morning visit Konark a local fishing village. Considered to be one of Hindu India’s foremost architectural treasures, Konark is a World Heritage Site famous for its Sun Temple built by King Langula Narasimha Deva in the 13th Century. (B/D)

Day 11 Puri (Tuesday)

Day 12 Puri (Wednesday)

At leisure in Puri. (B/D)

Day 13 Puri to Bhubaneshwar – 65kms (Thursday)
In the morning leave for Bhubaneshwar. In the afternoon visit the Bindusagar Tank the focal point of the city. Although many of the original temples no longer remain those that do are regarded to be masterpieces of Hindu architecture with the most famous being the great Lingaraja, Muktesvara and Parsuramesvara Temples. Stay overnight at the Trident Hotel. (B)

Day 14 Bhubaneshwar to Kolkata – by air (Friday)
This morning drive outside of the city to visit the Yogini temple and bell metal work village known as Balakati. In the afternoon transfer to the airport for flight back to Kolkata. Stay at the Oberoi Grand Hotel for two nights. (B)

Day 15 Kolkata (Saturday)
At leisure with a car and driver at your disposal. You may wish to visit the Indian Museum and the Victoria Memorial. (B)

Day 16 Kolkata to London Heathrow (Sunday)
Depart Kolkata on the British Airways flight to London Heathrow. (B)

Experience the Himalayan countries of Nepal or Bhutan. Easily reach by air from Kolkata, both offer beautiful landscapes and fascinating culture. Traditional and charming, the little visited Bhutan, in particular, is a hidden gem that has remained unchanged over the centuries.

Cruise the mighty Brahmaputra in Assam aboard the RV Charaidew or RV Sukapha operated by the Assam Bengal Navigation Company. Known for the National Parks that border the river, there are also temples, tea gardens and numerous tribal villages to explore in an untouched land of charming people and beautiful landscapes.

Discover north-east Indian state of Sikkim easily reached by air from Kolkata. A region with a distinct identity, the sleepy towns of Darjeeling, Gangtok, Pelling and Kalimpong offer a slower pace to life that the bustling major cities.

Prices vary according to selected airlines, hotels and season, however, an indication to the current cost of this itinerary is from £3,400. All prices are per person and are based on a minimum of TWO persons travelling together and sharing a twin bedded room with meals as indicated.
