Fly via Dubai with Emirates to Kolkata.

Day 2 Arrive Kolkata
Arrive in Kolkata and stay at the Oberoi Grand Hotel situated in the heart of the city. Spend the remainder of the day sightseeing with your local guide. (B)

Day 3 Kolkata to Guwahati – by air
This morning fly to Guwahati and on arrival transfer to Manas National Park, located on the border with Bhutan. This Project Tiger reserve is now recovering well from earlier unrest – the tiger count is now estimated at around 30 and wild elephant number some 500. Stay for two nights at the simple ABN Bansbari Lodge. (B/L/D)

Day 4 Manas
Take an early morning elephant ride through grassland, hopefully seeing several different species of deer and monkeys, as well as some of the park’s 380 different species of birds. After breakfast, walk through a local village, visit a nearby tea garden and see Bodo tribal hand–weaving, If time permits, see working elephants bathing in the Beki River before carrying on by jeep to Mothanguri Lodge for sunset over the Manas River. Returning in the dusk, there is further a further chance to see wildlife, from wild buffalo to wild elephant and, if exceptionally lucky, a tiger. (B/L/D)

Day 5 Manas to Guwahati
Drive back to Guwahati this morning via Hajo, a place sacred to Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists. After lunch at an idyllic private estate, reach Guwahati for a short sightseeing tour of the city including a drive up Nilachal Hill to see the holy Kamakhya temple and the poignant Commonwealth War Graves cemetery. Finally walk through a local market before embarking on either the Assam Bengal Navigation RV Charaidew or RV Sukapha setting sail upstream to Kurua. (B/L/D)

Day 6 Brahmaputra Cruise
Today is spent cruising upstream with hills rising on either side. Battling against strong currents, reach an idyllic stop at Ganesh Pahar where it is possible to explore on foot a delightfully serene hinterland lying under jungle–covered slopes. (B/L/D)

Day 7 Brahmaputra Cruise
Leaving the hills behind, today enjoy a first taste of the wilderness that is to come. A short stop may be made to visit a bank-side village, before mooring for the night in a lunar landscape of sand islands, with hopefully the Himalayas in view providing a contrasting backdrop in the distance. (B/L/D)

Day 8 Orang and Kaziranga National Park
Rising early, leave the ship and board a country boat for a cruise up a side–stream to the Orang National Park. Here, in this rarely visited park, mount elephants – or take jeeps – riding through forest and grassland looking for rhino, deer and other wildlife. Later, leave Orang and continue to Tezpur to visit the 6th Century Da Parbatia temple ruins, before continuing to Kaziranga National Park and the comfortable ABN Diphlu River Lodge which will be your base for the next two nights.

Kaziranga is a World Heritage site and with a population of well over 1,500 rhinoceros is the best place in the world to see these beasts. There are also good populations of tiger, wild elephant, sambar, swamp deer, hog deer, wild pig and many other species. (B/L/D)

Day 9 Kaziranga National Park
Rise at dawn and drive for a few minutes to Kaziranga’s Central Range for an early morning elephant ride – the best way to get really close to the rhino and other animals. After breakfast back at the lodge, walk through terraced tea gardens and past a Karbi tribal village, later driving to a Mising tribal village with its distinctive houses raised on piles. After lunch take a jeep safari in the Western Range and scan the wilderness from an observation tower. (B/L/D)

Sacred Varanasi, India’s holiest city is now linked by a new direct flight from Kolkata. Located on the banks of the River Ganges, Varanasi is an assault on the senses and, at dawn, a sight to behold.

Kolkata, a city of literature and culture, is well worth further exploration and a few extra days here at the end of the tour can easily be added.
