SHAYOK RIVER JOURNEY - LADAKH VILLAGE EXTENSION

Day 11 Nimoo to Shayok
After breakfast, you will be driven for around five to six hours from the Nimoo village house to the small village of Agyam (3310m), which is the starting point of your river journey. The Shayok river valley was one of the traditional Silk Routes where traders would use rafts made of animal skins to cross the river. The scenery is dramatic as the river cuts through a wide valley between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges. Though we will use river rafts, the water here is not more than grade two rapids, which does not qualify as white water rafting. The first night of your river journey will be spent at Shakti’s exclusive Shayok River Camp. Accommodation will be in dome tents, though Shakti’s usual standard of food and service will make up for the simplicity of the accommodation. (B/L/D)

Day 12 Shayok to Nubra
After breakfast at the camp you will board the raft for your first days rafting. The first part of the trip takes you through incredible scenery of high altitude desert, snow-capped peaks and dramatic rock formations. After two hours, you will stop for a picnic lunch by the side of the river. Continue for a further two or so hours of rafting, you will stop at Shakti’s second camp near the village Tsati (3225m) in the Nubra valley. (B/L/D)

Day 13 Nubra to Leh
After breakfast you will continue rafting from Tsati to Diskit. Visit the monastery at Diskit which dates from the 14th century, before continuing on to Hundar, where you will have lunch. Hundar is famous for its sand dunes that are far more reminiscent of the Sahara than the Tibetan plateau and come complete with a resident population of the double-humped Bactrian camels. In the afternoon begin the five hour drive back to Leh, crossing over the world’s highest motorable road, the Khardungla (5385m) you will arrive in Leh in the late afternoon. Stay overnight at the Grand Dragon Hotel in Leh. (B/L/D)

Day 14 Leh to Delhi – by air
Early this morning, you will be collected from The Grand Dragon and transferred to Leh Airport in time to check-in for your domestic flight black to Delhi. (B)

High Altitude: At all places in this Ladakh itinerary the altitude exceeds 3,000m above sea level. Please consult your doctor as to the suitability of this journey in relation to your health and the possible risks of altitude sickness.

STAYING ON

Festivals are a common part of life in Ladakh and the celebrations at Hemis are some of the most famous. Held to commemorate the birth of Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Tantric Buddhism in Tibet, the festival is characterised by the sacred dance of Hemis which is performed wearing facial masks and colourful robes. The festival will take place on the 1st and 2nd July 2010.

Extend your stay in Delhi with a visit to the world famous Taj Mahal in Agra or colourful Jaipur, the state capital of Rajasthan.

Experience the Himalayan countries of Nepal or Bhutan. Easily reach by air from Delhi, both offer beautiful landscapes and fascinating culture. Traditional and charming, the little visited Bhutan, in particular, is a hidden gem that has remained unchanged over the centuries.

Wildlife in India is synonymous with the famous Corbett National Park. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, Corbett is a 300kms drive north of Delhi and a four night stay here, with your time divided on the perimeter and inside the park, is an excellent way to observe the wildlife in its natural habitat. Corbett National Park is only open from the 15th November to the 15th June.

Relax on the beaches of Goa or Kerala – both easily reached by air direct from Delhi. With a range of hotels to choose from both locations offer something for everyone and are an excellent way to end a tour. Time in Kerala could also be extended with a cruise on the backwaters.
