NORTH INDIA
For many visitors Delhi is the first point of
contact with India. It is a
fascinating city of diverse contrasts. Old Delhi is
a 17th century Mughal
city, dominated by the Red Fort and full of thriving
bazaars. New Delhi reflects the formal splendour of
Sir Edwin Lutyen’s architecture in its wide tree-lined
avenues, museums and imposing civic buildings. To the
west of Delhi lies the desert state of Rajasthan noted
for its magnificent forts and palaces. In addition to
the well known cities of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and
Jaisalmer we also feature many of the interesting rural
ancestral homes which are a highlight of Rajasthan.
Travel east to the immortal Taj Mahal at Agra, the erotic
statues of Khajuraho and the holy city of Varanasi on
the sacred Ganges. To the north of Delhi lie the Western
Himalayas with their remote and rugged landscapes, fertile
foothills and the former hillstations of the Raj.

WILDLIFE
With over 400 sanctuaries India’s forests harbour
an unsurpassed variety of wildlife. They are home to
many rare and unique species – the majestic tiger,
the Asiatic lion, the one horned rhinoceros, the Asian
elephant and many species of deer and birds. Within
reach of Delhi are the National Parks of Corbett and
Ranthambore both best known as tiger reserves. The sanctuary
at Bharatpur, near Agra, is noted for its migratory
birds. Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench National Parks in
central India are noted for tiger and they are considered
to be some of the finest in Asia. To the north east
of Kolkata, in Assam, is Kaziranga National Park, which
is home to the unique one-horned rhinoceros. In South
India one of the finest is Nagarhole National Park near
Mysore where you may find the four-horned antelope and
the elephant.

SOUTH INDIA
Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi and Trivandrum are all major
gateways into Southern India. The south, more exotic
than the north, is the crossroads of many cultures.
Its four states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil
Nadu and Kerala all have a distinct identity. This is
a land of palmed-fringed beaches, misty highlands, tranquil
backwaters, lush green paddy fields and magnificent
temples. The delightful city of Mysore gives way to
the fading glory of the hill stations of Ooty and Coonoor.
Further south is Kochi on the Malabar Coast the oldest
European settlement in India and a good base for exploring
the nearby tropical backwaters. Also essential are the
vibrant cities of Mumbai and Chennai, or for a complete
contrast you can also discover some of the greatest
temple treasures in India at Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram,
Tanjore and Madurai.

EAST INDIA
Kolkata, gateway to Eastern India, is a city
of extreme contrasts. It is the forward-thinking intellectual
capital of India and noted for some wonderful landmarks
of the British Raj. On the other hand, the city that
has been called ‘the soul of India’ is one
of the most populous cities on earth. Above all Kolkata
is an intensely human city and the warmth and charm
of its people is to be experienced. To the north of
Kolkata, in the shadows of the mighty Kanchenjunga,
lie the old Raj hill station of Darjeeling and the small
Himalayan State of Sikkim. Further east the state of
Assam is probably best known for its tea plantations
and the mighty Brahmaputra River. South of Kolkata lies
the rural state of Orissa which is a fascinating area
to explore, giving an insight into a way of life completely
different from the rest of India.
