FESTIVALS OF NORTH INDIA
Rajasthan is famous for its numerous festivals which take place throughout the year. The following are a selection of that you may wish to include when planning your journey.
Pushkar
This fair, near Ajmer, will take place between the 10th and 13th November
2008, 29th October and 2nd November 2009 and 18th to 21st November
2010. Around November, at the time of the full moon, this colourful
and exciting festival brings together traders and pilgrims for several
days of horse dealing, camel racing and festivities. The climax takes
place on the night of the full moon when pilgrims gather to bathe
in the holy lake.
Marwar
This festival in Jodhpur will take place on the 13th and 14th October
2008, 3rd and 4th October 2009 and 21st and 22nd November 2010. Focussing
on the art and culture of the Jodhpur region, the Marwar Festival
is devoted almost exclusively to Rajasthani folk songs and dance.
Jaipur
The Elephant Festival of Jaipur takes place on the 10th March 2009
and the 28th February 2010. A unique event held annually in Jaipur,
the Elephant Festival is characterised by highly decorated elephant
processions, elephant races, elephant polo and elephant tug-of-war.
This spectacular event is also known for its camel parades, horse
events and lively folk music.
