Day 1 London to Tripoli
Fly from London with British Airways to Tripoli where you
will be met upon arrival. Stay at the Corinthia Bab Africa
Hotel for two nights.
Day 2 Tripoli
Known as the 'White Bride of the Mediterranean' Tripoli
is a charming city that is truly captivating. Spend the
day sightseeing with your guide. Visit the excellent National
Museum, which houses many treasures, the magnificent 18th
century Karamanli House, the Arch of Marcus Aurelius and
the mosques and souks in the lively Médina.
Day 3 Tripoli to Benghazi
– by air
This morning fly to Benghazi. Afternoon sightseeing in Libya’s
second city including the World War II cemetery, Souk al-Jareed
and Tahrir Square. Stay overnight at the Tibesti Hotel or
similar.
Day 4 Benghazi to Cyrene
– 200kms
After breakfast depart for the Greco-Roman sites of Teuchira
(Tocra) and Ptolemais (Tolmeita); the latter is noted for
its columned palace and underground cisterns. Continue to
Cyrene where you will stay for the next three nights.
Day 5 Cyrene
Cyrene, founded in the 7th century BC, is said to be the
best preserved of the Greek cities of Cyrenaica whilst the
temples, tombs and theatre were originally modelled on those
at Delphi. The city covers a huge area and is still only
partly excavated and its location, high on a bluff overlooking
the Mediterranean Sea, is breathtaking. Sites include the
Temple of Apollo, Acropolis, Agora, Forum, Stoa of Hermes
and Hercules, House of Jason Magnus and the Temple of Zeus.
Day 6 Cyrene
Visit the picturesque ancient port of Apollonia approximately
15kms to the north of Cyrene. The port is reached by a pleasant
road descending 1,800 feet over two escarpments from which
fine views down to the coastal plain, with its farms, terraced
fields and stone water channels, can be enjoyed. Surrounding
the city there are a variety of tombs constituting part
of the vast necropolis which dates from the early Greek
to the late Roman period. Some of these tombs were reused
as oil press chambers by the Romans and later even became
dwellings for local inhabitants. In the 2nd and 3rd century
Apollonia increased in size and wealth and by the 4th century
AD had become the capital of the province of Upper Libya.
Day 7 Cyrene to Tripoli
– by air
Today visit the tiny pre-Islamic temple of Slontah noted
for its eerie carvings, as well as Qasr Libya to see the
Byzantine church and unique collection of mosaics. Continue
to Benghazi for your return flight to Tripoli. Stay overnight
at the Corinthia Bab Africa Hotel.
Day 8 Tripoli to Ghadames
– 650kms
Depart with your guide/driver and travel through the Jebel
Nefusa mountain range to Ghadames – southwest of Tripoli
– stopping at the beautiful fortified Berber granaries
of Qasr al Haj and Nalut. Stay for two nights at the Dar
Ghadames Hotel or similar.
Day 9 Ghadames
Famous for its desert architecture, the oasis town of Ghadames
is close to the borders of both Algeria and Tunisia and
was once the southern outpost of the Roman Empire. Explore
the picturesque old town with its ‘cake and icing’
architecture and its labyrinthine streets. In the afternoon
take a 4WD excursion to Ras Al-Ghoul and the sand dunes
to watch the sunset.
Day 10 Ghadames to Gharyan
– 570kms
Today take a different route back towards Tripoli visiting
Kabaw to see the fascinating fortified grain store and the
abandoned escarpment village of Tormisa. Head on to Gharyan
noted for its pottery and troglodyte houses to stay overnight
at the Dar Gharyan Hotel or similar.
Day 11 Gharyan to Zliten
– 170kms
Regarded as the best Roman site in the Mediterranean, Leptis
Magna is a triumph of Roman engineering with spectacular
architecture on a massive scale. During your tour of the
site a visit will be made to the excellent museum. Stay
overnight in nearby Zliten or Misrata.
Day 12 Zliten to Tripoli
via Leptis Magna – 170kms
This morning visit the Mausoleum and Mosque of Sidi Abdusalam
and then return to Leptis Magna for further viewing. On
your return to Tripoli a visit will be made to Villa Celine,
the home of a Roman nobleman which overlooks the Mediterranean
Sea. Stay at the Corinthia Bab Africa Hotel for two nights.
Day 13 Visit Sabrata
Today visit Sabrata 80kms west of Tripoli. Settled in the
late 5th and early 6th Centuries BC by the Phoenicians,
Sabrata evolved as a Roman city in the latter half of the
1st century AD and reached its peak in the following hundred
years, particularly during the reign of Septimus Severus,
who was born in nearby Leptis Magna.
Day 14 Tripoli to London
At leisure until transfer to the airport for your return
flight to London with British Airways.
