Day 1 London to Tripoli
Fly from London with British Airways to Tripoli where you
will be met upon arrival. Stay at the Corinthia Bab Africa
Hotel for two nights.
Day 2 Tripoli
Known as the ‘White Bride of the Mediterranean’
Tripoli is a charming city that is truly captivating. Spend
the day sightseeing with your guide. Visit the excellent
National Museum, which houses many treasures excavated from
the ancient cities within Libya, the 18th century Karamanli
House, the Arch of Marcus Aurelius and the mosques and souks
in the lively Médina.
Day 3 Tripoli to Ghadames
– 650kms
Depart with your driver and travel through the Jebel Nefusa
mountain range to Ghadames – southwest of Tripoli
– stopping at the beautiful fortified Berber granaries
of Qasr al Haj and Nalut. Stay for two nights at the Dar
Ghadames Hotel or similar.
Day 4 Ghadames
Famous for its desert architecture this oasis town is close
to the borders of both Algeria and Tunisia and was once
the southern outpost of the Roman Empire. Explore the picturesque
old town with its ‘cake and icing’ architecture
and labyrinthine streets.
Day 5 Ghadames to Gharyan
– 570kms
Today take a different route back towards Tripoli visiting
Kabaw to see the fascinating fortified grain store and the
abandoned escarpment village of Tormisa. Head on to Gharyan
noted for its troglodyte houses. Stay overnight in Gharyan,
at the Dar Gharyan Hotel or similar.
Day 6 Gharyan to Tripoli
via Leptis Magna – 260kms
Regarded as the best Roman site in the Mediterranean, Leptis
Magna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a triumph of Roman
engineering with spectacular architecture on a massive scale
that will impress even the most ruin-weary traveller. During
your tour of the site we also include a visit to the excellent
museum and to the almost completely intact amphitheatre.
On your return to Tripoli a visit will be made to Villa
Celine the home of a Roman nobleman overlooking the Mediterranean.
Stay at the Corinthia Bab Africa Hotel for two nights.
Day 7 Visit Sabrata
Today visit Sabrata 80kms to the west of Tripoli. Settled
in the late 5th and early 6th centuries BC by the Phoenicians,
Sabrata evolved as a Roman city in the latter half of the
1st century AD and reached its peak in the following hundred
years, particularly during the reign of Septimus Severus.
The most spectacular site in Sabrata is the Theatre, probably
built during the reign of the Emperor Commodus, 161-192
AD, with its three-storey backdrop of columns.
Day 8 Tripoli to London
At leisure until transfer to the airport for return flight
to London with British Airways.
