INTO THE HEART OF BORNEO
Day 1 London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur
Depart London Heathrow on the Malaysian Airlines flight non-stop to
Kuala Lumpur.
Day 2 Arrive Kuala Lumpur
Arrive Kuala Lumpur and on arrival proceed by car to the Grand Millennium
Hotel or upgrade to Ritz Carlton Hotel. (N)
Day 3 Kuala Lumpur
This morning explore the city with a local guide covering the major
historical landmarks such as the King’s Palace, the National
Monument, the National Museum and the Merdeka Square. Also visit KL
Tower and enjoy a panoramic view of the city. (B)
Day 4 Kuala Lumpur to Kuching – by air
Fly to Kuching and on arrival stay at the Kuching Hilton Hotel. Afternoon
tour the town including Fort Margarita built by Raja Charles Brooke
in the 1870s. Also visit the Sarawak Museum established in 1891 which
houses a fine collection of flora and fauna together with the history
and culture of the tribal people of Sarawak. (B)
Day 5 Kuching to Sibu – by air
Today fly to Sibu, a bustling port city, and board the RV Orient Pandaw
where the remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the town on
foot. Known for its attractive streets of old Chinese shop houses,
Sibu is similar to Malacca and Penang yet there are very few tourists.
Nowadays Sibu’s port is a base for both with sea going ships
and fast express boats that depart for the interior. (B/D)
Day 6 Sibu to Kanowit
Cast off at dawn and proceed up the mighty Rajang River with a morning
stop to visit the rattan workshops. Continue on to the river station
of Kanowit and visit the Brooke Raj Fort Emma which is made of wood
and amazingly surviving intact after one-hundred and fifty years.
Explore deeper inland by long boat up the Kanowit River before an
optional trek back to the Pandaw moored at Kanowit. (B/L/D)
Day 7 Kanowit to Kapit
Continue upriver to Kapit, home to the interesting Fort Sylvia. There
is also an adjacent tattoo museum showing traditional Iban designs
and techniques. Later explore an original Iban longhouse which is
a rare sight since most have been rebuilt in a modern style. (B/L/D)
Day 8 Kapit to Nagamujong
Leave Kapit and turn up the main tributary of the Rajang, the Batang
Baleh, navigable for the RV Orient Pandaw for one further day. Pass
logging camps, strictly controlled by the Sarawak government, who
also implement an extensive replanting programme. Visit a logging
camp and stay overnight at Nagamujong village with its long house,
school and church. We will also see loading points for coal coming
from mines deep in the jungle. (B/L/D)
Day 9 Nagamujong to Pelagus
Rejoin the Rajang River and sail another 40kms towards the Pelagus
Rapids. This section of the river is incredibly beautiful with thousands
of islands, reefs and shoals. Navigation here can be difficult depending
on water levels and it may be necessary to transfer to long boats
to continue the journey. At Pelagus make a short trek to the Pelagus
Resort Hotel for afternoon tea and stupendous views of the rapids.

Day 10 Pelagus to Kapit
Today there is a further opportunity to trek in and around the Pelagus
Resort and to explore this primary rain forest which is extraordinarily
rich in both fauna and flora. After lunch return downstream towards
Kapit. (B/L/D)
Day 11 Kapit to Sarikei
Begin the day traveling downstream to Song, a small river station
between Kanowit and Kapit. Here you will be able to make a boat trip
up the Katibas River to visit long houses. There is also an opportunity
to trek part of the way back to Song. Later continue downriver throughout
evening. (B/L/D)
Day 12 Sarikei to Bintangor
This morning enter the Rajang delta region which is rich in agricultural
life. At Sarikei visit a deer farm as well as local pepper plantations.
Dock at Thanjung Manis, the main seaport and gateway to the Rajang,
and drive a short distance to visit some village workshops that specialise
in songkat weaving. Return upstream and stop overnight at Bintangor.

Day 13 Sibu to Kota Kinabalu - by air
Dock in Sibu early this morning and disembark for your onward flight
to Kota Kinabalu. On your arrival stay at the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru
Resort or at the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort in Tuaran. (B)
Day 14 Kota Kinabalu

Day 17 Kota Kinabalu
At leisure (B)
Day 18 Kota Kinabalu to London Heathrow
Fly from Kota Kinabalu back to Kuala Lumpur and connect onto the Malaysian
Airlines flight to London. (B)
Day 19 Arrive London Heathrow
Arrive into London Heathrow.
STAYING ON
Adventure is close at hand with a Mount Kinabalu trek. For the energetic this strenuous three day summit trek is well worth the effort with some spectacular scenery and incredible views from the 4,095 metre peak.

A two hour journey by ferry along the Kinabatangan River from Sandakan, we recommend staying at the nearby Sukau Rainforest Lodge which offers the added opportunity to view birds and wildlife in their mangrove, wetland and rainforest habitat.
