HIMALAYAN LODGE TREK
Day 1 Pokhara to Sanctuary Lodge (3-4 hours)
On your arrival in Pokhara you will be met and transferred by road
with guides and porters to the trek start point. The walk follows
a ridgeline in the lower foothills of the Annapurnas with surrounding
views of the Pokhara Valley. This route then drops to the Modi River
Valley, where Ker & Downey's Sanctuary Lodge is located. The lodge
has magnificent views of the sacred and unclimbed Fishtail Mountain,
or Machhapuchhre, as it is locally known. A picnic lunch is provided
with a late afternoon arrival at the Lodge. Stay overnight at the
Sanctuary Lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 2 Sanctuary Lodge to Himalaya Lodge (5-6 hours)
After breakfast, leave the lodge and walk through the outlying farms
following the Modi River Valley before climbing out of the valley
and up towards the mountains. The trail passes through small hamlets,
terraced rice fields and forests with spectacular views of the surrounding
valley. Snacks are provided along the trail while hot lunch is served
on arrival at the lodge in the early afternoon. From the lodge there
are magnificent close up views of the surrounding mountains. Stay
for two nights at the Himalaya Lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 3 Himalaya Lodge
Wake this morning with tea and coffee served in the garden and watch
the sunrise over Annapurna South, Annapurna 1, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna,
and the Fishtail. After enjoying a relaxing breakfast and the glorious
views from the Himalaya Lodge explore the mountain village of Ghandruk
and the surrounding countryside. Ghandruk was once a major recruitment
centre for the famous Gurkha soldiers. The women of Ghandruk maintain
a local industry of weaving traditional Nepalese rugs. (B/L/D)
Day 4 Himalaya Lodge to Sanctuary Lodge (4 hours)
After breakfast, leave the Himalaya Lodge and continue back out through
the village of Ghandruk. Buffaloes and goats graze in the surrounding
fields and you may have to make way for the donkey and mule trains
that convey goods to and from the Gurkha settlements. Continue descending
until reaching Shauli Bazaar and from here follow along the Modi River
until reaching the Sanctuary Lodge. Enjoy lunch at the lodge followed
by another opportunity to walk to the village of Birethanti. Stay
overnight at the Sanctuary Lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 5 Sanctuary Lodge to Gurung Lodge (2 hours)
This morning leave the Sanctuary lodge and trek to Ker & Downey's
Gurung Lodge. The lodge is built along the lines of a traditional
Nepalese village and every room has spectacular views of the surrounding
valley and mountains. After lunch visit the local village of Tanchok
where there will be a talk at a local house, now made into a museum,
and the chance to visit the local school. Overnight will be spent
at the Gurung Lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 6 Gurung Lodge to Basanta Lodge (3-4 hours)
Today start the day trekking through the unspoiled village of Patlekhet.
The walk takes us through sub-tropical forests that include tree orchids,
rhododendrons and magnolias. Along the way, we will stop at the village
of Pothana where many Tibetan traders live. Later arrive at the Basanta
Lodge where there are sweeping views of the entire Annapurna Range.
After lunch at the lodge there will be an optional walk through the
old village of Dhampus. Stay overnight at the Basanta Lodge. (B/L/D)
Day 7 Basanta Lodge to Pokhara (2 hours)
After breakfast, depart along the ridge and descend through the wooded
hillside and terraced farmland to the valley floor before continuing
back, by car, to Pokhara in time for your flight back to Kathmandu.
STAYING ON
Wildlife and the world famous Chitwan National Park are a direct flight from Kathmandu. A beautiful reserve, Chitwan is rich in wildlife with one-horned rhinoceros, sloth bear, deer and Royal Bengal Tiger all found in the park. Viewing is by jeep, on foot or by elephant back and we recommend staying at the famous Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge.
History and culture are evident throughout the Kathmandu Valley and an excellent way to understand Nepal is to spend time in this vibrant region. Explore the many markets and temples of the capital as well as the ancient city of Patan and the medieval Bhaktapur which are both within easy reach of Kathmandu.
Experience the mountainous Himalayan Kingdom Bhutan. Easily reach by air from Kathmandu, Bhutan offers beautiful landscapes and fascinating culture. Traditional and charming, the little visited Bhutan is a hidden gem that captivates travellers and has remained unchanged over the centuries.
Sacred Varanasi, India’s holiest city, is only a short flight from Kathmandu. Located on the banks of the River Ganges, Varanasi is an assault on the senses and, at dawn, a sight to behold. Vibrant Kolkata can also be reached from Kathmandu by air.
Extend your stay in the subcontinent with a visit to the world famous Taj Mahal in Agra or colourful Jaipur, the state capital of Rajasthan
