A JOURNEY THROUGH SRI LANKA

Day 1 Depart London Heathrow
Depart from London on Srilankan Airlines to Colombo.

Day 2 Arrive Colombo
On your arrival in Colombo you will be met and transferred to the Havelock Bungalow where you will stay overnight. Later in the afternoon tour Colombo visiting the markets of the Fort and Pettah area of the city, the National Museum and Galle Face Green.

Day 3 Colombo to Sigiriya – 170kms
Leave this morning by car to rural Sigiriya in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, stopping en-route to see the elephant orphanage at Pinnawela. Afterwards continue onto Sigiriya to stay for three nights at the Vil Uyana. (B)

Day 4 Sigiriya

Day 5 Sigiriya

Over the next two days explore the area with your driver. Visit Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first capital and its most sacred town. Anuradhapura is littered with ruined temples and palaces as well as the site containing a sapling from the tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment. Also visit Polonnaruwa, the capital of Sri Lanka during the 11th and 12th Centuries. See the ruins of the Royal Palace and three splendid statues of the Buddha in upright, sedentary and recumbent postures. Climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, to see the famous frescoes of the heavenly maidens and climb through the ‘Lion’s Throat’ to the dramatic viewpoint towering 200 metres above the surrounding forest. (B)

Day 6 Sigiriya to Kandy – 72kms
After breakfast leave for Kandy visiting en-route the Dambulla Rock Temple, whose paintings and sculptures of the Buddha are among the most impressive in Sri Lanka. Drive on through spice gardens to Kandy, the capital of Sri Lanka’s hill country and the last capital of the Sinhala kings. In the evening visit the Temple of the Tooth which houses Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist relic. Stay for two nights at The Kandy House.

Day 7 Kandy
The name Kandy conjures visions of splendour and magnificence and surrounded by verdant green hills it is considered to be the most beautiful and romantic city in the island. Drive around Kandy Lake and see the bazaar, arts and crafts centre, a gem museum and a lapidary. Also visit the vast Peradeniya Botanical Gardens which include an amazing variety of trees, plants and flowers. (B)

Day 8 Kandy to Tea Trails
After breakfast leave with your driver to Tea Trails in central Sri Lanka. Here in solitude, at an elevation of 4,000 feet above sea level, lies Ceylon Tea Trails, four classic colonial bungalows built for British tea estate managers in the days of the Raj. You set your own pace while at Tea Trails making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. Stay at Tea Trails for two nights. (B/L/D)

Day 9 Tea Trails
At leisure to relax or take local walks around the estate. (B/L/D)

Day 10 Tea Trails to Yala National Park
This morning leave Tea Trails and drive through the countryside to Yala National Park. Established as a protected area in 1938, the park is famed for its elephant population and for being the home of arguably the highest concentration of leopards in the world – although sightings of this elusive animal still remain quite rare. On your arrival continue onto the Chaaya Wild Resort where you will stay for the next two nights. (B)

Day 11 Yala National Park
Visit the park at sunrise and sunset in the company of an expert naturalist. (B)

Day 12 Yala National Park to Galle
This morning leave Yala National Park and drive to Galle. Once the chief port of British Ceylon, today the city of Galle is divided into two parts – the modern, bustling centre and the historic, colonial fort. On your arrival in Galle continue onto the historic Galle Fort Hotel where you will stay for the next two nights. (B)

Day 13 Galle
Today explore Galle old town and the fort with your driver-guide. With incredibly well-preserved colonial architecture, bastions and city gates, highlights include the ramparts, the Dutch Reformed Church which dates from 1754, the pretty old post office, All Saints Church built in 1868 and old Arab Quarter. (B)

Day 14 Galle to Wadduwa
This morning leave Galle and drive to Reef Villa where you will stay for the next four nights. A beautifully designed and luxurious villa, Reef is set in three acres of exotic tropical gardens with palm fringed pavilions and reflection pools that combine the best of European and Sri Lankan architecture. (B)

With the shimmering Indian Ocean as its backdrop, there are just seven unique and exclusive palatial suites – both elegant and luxurious, designed along Indo-Colonial lines. With a vast sandy beachfront, other facilities include an all weather tennis court, large swimming pool, lush tropical gardens, huge lily ponds, garden pavilions, gourmet kitchens and a spa. (B)

Day 18 Wadduwa to Colombo
Colombo London Heathrow

Today transfer to Colombo Airport in good time to catch your onward Srilankan Airlines flight to London. (B)

Prices vary according to selected airlines, hotels and season, however, an indication to the current cost of this itinerary is from £3,990. All prices are per person and are based on a minimum of TWO persons travelling together and sharing a twin bedded room with meals as indicated.
