THE TEA HILLS OF CEYLON

Day 1 London to Colombo
Depart from London on Srilankan Airlines to Colombo.

Day 2 Colombo
On your arrival you will be met and transferred by car to The Park Street Hotel where you will stay overnight. Formerly a 250 year old colonial bungalow set in the heart of Colombo, it is now a charmingly friendly twelve room boutique hotel. (N)

Day 3 Colombo to Summerville Bungalow – 150kms
After breakfast leave with your driver to Castlereagh Reservoir in central Sri Lanka. Here in solitude, at an elevation of 4,000 feet above sea level, lies Ceylon Tea Trails, four classic colonial bungalows built for British tea estate managers in the days of the Raj. You set your own pace while at Tea Trails and this itinerary follows a walking trail from one bungalow to the next with your luggage being delivered ahead of your arrival. Stay at Summerville Bungalow for two nights. (B/L/D)

Day 4 Summerville
At leisure to relax or take local walks around the estate. (B/L/D)

Day 5 Walk to Castlereagh Bungalow – 5kms
This morning walk to Castlereagh Bungalow in time for lunch. Afternoon at leisure. (B/L/D)

Day 6 Castlereagh
At leisure to relax or take local walks around the estate. (B/L/D)

Day 7 Walk to Norwood Bungalow – 19kms
This morning walk to Norwood Bungalow and stay overnight. (B/L/D)

Day 8 Norwood to Kandy – 130kms
Leave after breakfast with your driver for Kandy which was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is now a World Heritage Site. Drive around Kandy Lake built by the last Sinhala king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1798. Visit the Kandy town and bazaar, the arts and crafts centre, a gem museum and a lapidary. In the evening visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy. Stay for two nights at The Kandy House – please note this small boutique hotel is situated approximately 20 minutes by car from the centre of Kandy. (B)

Day 9 Kandy
This morning drive outside of the Kandy to visit the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975. The original objective of establishing the orphanage inclined more towards tourism, but it soon became a conservation and educational centre. Return to Kandy and in the afternoon visit the Peradeniya botanical garden was first built as a pleasure garden by a Sinhala king and was expanded by the British. It is 147 acres in extent and provides an amazing variety of trees, plants and flowers. (B)

Day 10 Kandy to Wadduwa – 150kms
After breakfast proceed by car to Wadduwa to stay for four nights at Reef Villa. Please note that your driver will end his services upon your arrival at your hotel. This luxurious villa is set in three acres of exotic tropical gardens with palm fringed pavilions and reflection pools that create the romance and grandeur of Sri Lanka. (B)

At leisure – no car, driver or guide (B)

Day 14 Wadduwa to Colombo – 80kms
Depart Colombo

Transfer by car to the airport for your Sri Lankan Airlines flight to London. (B)

STAYING ON

Extend your stay in Sri Lanka and take time to explore Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle of Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa. All of these are easily reached by car from Kandy.

Wildlife viewing on the island can easily be incorporated into this itinerary with a visit to Yala National Park. Located on the southern coast, Yala is only 190kms from Nuwara Eliya.

Prices vary according to selected airlines, hotels and season, however, an indication to the current cost of this itinerary is from £3,590.00. All prices are per person and are based on a minimum of TWO persons travelling together and sharing a twin bedded room with meals as indicated.
