IN SEARCH OF THE MUONG

Day 1 Hanoi to Ninh Binh - 220kms, Ninh Binh to Mai Chau - 185kms
Leave Hanoi early in the morning for Ninh Binh. On your arrival embark your sampan for the two hour cruise of Van Long Nature Reserve stopping at Van Long for lunch. Afterwards continue by car to Mai Chau where you will stay overnight at the Mai Chau lodge. (N)

Day 2 Mai Chau to Son La - 200kms
This morning explore the Mai Chau valley, and its many villages, on foot. After lunch it is a scenic drive to Son La where you will stay overnight in a Guesthouse. (B/L)

Day 3 Son La to Dien Bien Phu – 170kms
Leave early this morning for the attractive market town of Thuan Chau then continue via Tuan Giao where the road climbs through the spectacular scenery of the Pha Din Pass. Pass Red and White Hmong villages on the way to Dien Bien Phu - the site of the decisive battle in 1954 which ended the French occupation of Vietnam. Stay overnight at a local Guesthouse. (B)

Day 4 Dien Bien Phu to Lai Chau - 110kms
This morning explore the battlefield and the hills around Dien Bien Phu before continuing to Lai Chau to stay overnight in a Guesthouse. (B)

Day 5 Lai Chau to Sapa - 180kms
Today it is another scenic drive to Sapa passing the slopes of Mount Fan Si Pan which at 3,114 metres is the highest mountain in Vietnam. Sapa has many reminders of its French colonial past, however, it is also home to the Hmong, Dao and other tribes who come to the town to trade in the colourful weekend markets. Stay for two nights at the Victoria Sapa Hotel. (B)

Day 6 Sapa
At leisure to explore the town and beautiful countryside around Sapa. (B)

Day 7 Sapa to Hanoi - 380kms
This morning leave Sapa for the long but interesting drive back to the Vietnamese capital Hanoi. It may also be possible to take the Victoria Express train from nearby Lao Cai back to Hanoi depending on the schedule. (B)

A Guide to Price – IN SEARCH OF THE MUONG

Prices vary according to selected airlines, hotels and season, however, an indication to the current cost of this itinerary is from £950. All prices are per person and are based on a minimum of TWO persons travelling together and sharing a twin bedded room with meals as indicated.
