VIETNAM, CAMBODIA
& LAOS
Indo-China is a name sometimes given to the peninsula
between India and China which includes Burma, Thailand,
Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and the Malay Peninsula. The
main focal point of Indo-China is Vietnam, Laos and
Cambodia where between 1893 and 1954 they were united
politically and were known as French Indo-China. So
long inaccessible to the outside world Vietnam and Cambodia
are now rapidly emerging from their turbulent past.
There is so much to see in Vietnam from the rugged mountains
in the north and the natural beauty of Ha Long Bay to
Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta in the south.
Explore Hanoi, an old French colonial city, discover
Hue the old imperial city on the banks of the Perfume
River and delightful Hoi An with its cobbled streets
and colourful markets. Bustling Ho Chi Minh City is
the heart and soul of Vietnam with its myriad of street
markets, shops and pavement cafes. Cambodia is home
to the magnificent Angkor Wat one of the ancient wonders
of the world. Finally Laos the ‘forgotten country’
of South East Asia where life is centred on the mighty
Mekong River which flows through the western flank of
the country. Life on the river carries on much as it
did hundreds of years ago and holds a myriad of sights
and experiences for the traveller. The sleepy town of
Luang Prabang, set amongst beautiful hills on the banks
of the Mekong, is one the regions treasures. With its
historic temples, this UNESCO world heritage town is
a wonderful place to enjoy Laos. Steeped in history,
culture, outstanding natural beauty and welcomed by
a warm hearted people, travellers are once again discovering
the fascinating countries of Indo-China.
