OFF THE BEATEN TRACK IN TAMIL NADU
In
the state of Tamil Nadu, 100km east of the vibrant temple city of
Madurai, lies the region of Chettinad.
Once home to some of South India’s wealthiest merchant families, the community made their fortune overseas in Ceylon, Burma and Indo-China during the 19th and 20th Centuries before returning to Chettinad to settle, leaving an indelible mark by building many elaborate mansions. The town of Karaikkudi is the heart of this region and bears the legacy of this wealth. Magnificently grand mansions dot a town with thriving textile and antique shops while colourful local markets buzz with activity. Tucked away amid all this gentle charm is Visalam – a hotel where a stay is designed as an extension of the Chettinad way of life. High ceilings, open courtyards and elaborately carved Burmese teakwood combine to create a special atmosphere in a region of architectural delight.
