Travellers
contemplating a journey along the world’s second
highest road have just three months this summer in which
to experience a trip beyond the Great Himalayan range
to the edge of the Tibetan plateau.
Nigel Berry, Pettitts’ marketing
director, says: “This route is navigable for just
a dozen or so weeks annually. It offers some of the
most spectacular mountain scenery available to road
travellers, with the 485-kilometre journey from Manali
in India’s Himachal Pradesh to the Ladakh capital
Leh having rightly assumed nearlegendary status.”
Punctuated by barren landscapes assuming
fantastic and bizarre shapes and rocks producing surreal
splashes of colour, the two-day trip traverses the roof
of the world where Buddhist traditions co-exist alongside
local communities whose way of life has remained unchanged
for centuries.
Offered as an addition to Pettitts’
11-day Ladakh - Land of Discovery tour between mid July
and mid September only, the trip gives travellers the
chance to experience the timeless lure and fascination
of the Himalayas with innumerable opportunities for
simple sightseeing.
