The historian, writer and broadcaster Saul David - whose latest book Victoria’s War: The Rise of Empire - was published in May, is to lead a 13-day tour for Pettitts to mark the 150th anniversary of the Indian Mutiny.

The trip, which departs in February 2007 will take a maximum of 15 travellers to many of the key sights that witnessed extended periods of armed uprising and rebellion against British occupation.

David, whose 2003 book on The Indian Mutiny is generally regarded as one of the definitive military accounts of the British in the Subcontinent, will combine detailed research with atmospheric storytelling and tragic fact with compelling insight to show the true causes of mutiny were much more complex and disturbing than previously assumed.

Commenting on the trip, Saul David, says: “I am delighted to be leading this anniversary tour for Pettitts and to be working with such an acknowledged India specialist.

“We will cover the three main centres of resistance - Delhi, Lucknow and Kanpur (Cawnpore) - as well as Mirath (Meerut) where the mutiny began, Agra where the British were besieged in the fort for three months, Gwalior where the last major battle was fought, and Jhansi, the home of the celebrated Rani (the ‘Indian Joan of Arc’) who died in battle and is still revered in India today.

Other highlights include walking the battlefield of Badli-ki-Serai, where the British secured a vital victory; a visit to the stunning Red Fort in Delhi where the mutineers proclaimed Bahadur Shah II, the 82-year-old King of Delhi, as Emperor of India; Satichaura Ghat, in Cawnpore, the site of the infamous Ganges massacre; and the Residency at Lucknow which held out against the odds for five months. There will also be an opportunity to see world-renowned tourist attractions such as the Taj Mahal and the Qutb Minar tower outside Delhi.

Prices for the 13-day tour start from £2700 per person (based on two people travelling). Spaces are strictly limited so early booking is strongly recommended.
