How many years have you worked in travel and how did you get into the industry?
With over 36 years of experience in the travel industry, I've had the privilege of working across a wide range of sectors – each one adding to my passion for travel. My journey began with a Youth Training Scheme and since then, I've worn many hats, from front-line roles to strategic positions in Account Management, particularly within the cruise sector. These experiences have given me a great perspective on the ever-changing landscape of travel and I have enjoyed every moment.
What do you do outside of travelling or whilst travelling?
I enjoy walking and hiking, especially when it brings me close to nature and native wildlife – whether that's exploring the rugged coastlines and countryside of the UK or venturing overseas to discover new landscapes.
How many countries have you visited to date?
I have been lucky to have visited probably around 30 countries, still many more to explore!
What are your top three destination recommendations?
The Galapagos Islands This was the ultimate dream come true. Nowhere else have I felt so immersed in nature, surrounded by amazing birdlife and able to snorkel alongside marine turtles, playful sea lions, and even the odd Galapagos penguin. Chile I completely fell in love with Chile’s incredible diversity. From the stunning landscapes of the Atacama Desert to the vineyards of the wine region, the towering Andes Mountains, and finally beautiful Torres del Paine National Park. With its icebergs, glaciers, and dramatic peaks Chile offered everything I could want in one country. Canada Canada was a natural choice, drawn by my love of hiking and nature. Exploring the majestic Rockies, I wasn’t disappointed. The rugged beauty of the landscape, the peaceful lakes, and the wildlife encounters made it a truly unforgettable experience.
And the best-kept travel secret locations or experiences you’ve discovered along the way?
It has to be the remote and rugged island of Spitsbergen. Lying just 800 miles from the North Pole, it’s home to the small Arctic town of Longyearbyen, with a population of just over 2,500. Surrounded by little more than old trappers’ huts, isolated research stations and an icy wilderness. The draw for me was the opportunity to see the majestic polar bears, whom roam freely.
What do you listen or read/interest to when you’re travelling?
I don’t have a particular genre of book I like to read – it could be a good psychological thriller, or a light-hearted chick lit book. It depends on how the mood takes me.
Can you speak any other languages?
French badly… I did practice recently on a trip to Normandy…it was the confused look on the local’s faces which made me give up and turn to google translate instead.
Where is next on your wish list and why?
I have a very long wish list……..I would love to do a safari somewhere, as this is an area I haven’t really explored yet and it would ensure I get my 'wildlife fix'.
Any disaster stories/near misses on your travels?
Actually it was in Spitsbergen…..we had landed on a beach area and decided to head off for a short walk, on the way back a Polar Bear came between us and our Zodiac, completely blocking us off. Our guide took preventative measures and let off a flare, which then gave us time to clear off!
Any words of wisdom or top tips for travellers?
Immerse yourself in the local culture. This could be jumping on a local bus or heading off the beaten track to where the locals eat, for a more traditional meal. Take time to enjoy your surroundings, grab a map and explore!
