Exploring India's Golden Triangle

Author: David Pettitt

The Golden Triangle, located in northern India, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country and offers a glimpse into the region's rich history, culture and architecture. Comprising of the cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, the Golden Triangle is a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to India for the first-time and is a key component of a holiday to India.

Overview of India's Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is named after the roughly triangular geographical shape formed by the three cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. A classic route, the overall area covers approximately 720km and is usually explored in around 5 days. Each city has its own unique charm and offers a different experience to visitors. These cities also lend themselves to further exploring northern India - Jaipur is the gateway to Rajasthan whilst from Agra it is possible to travel south and east to Gwalior, Orchha and Khajuraho.

Best Time to Visit the Golden Triangle

In general it is considered that the best time to visit India and the Golden Triangle is during the winter months, from October to March. During this period the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing making it perfect for exploring the many forts, palaces and mausoleums and for experiencing the region's vibrant culture and traditions.

Top Attractions in the Golden Triangle

Delhi, the capital city of India, is a perfect blend of medieval old-world charm and Raj-era architecture. Iconic landmarks include the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and Humayun's Tomb. The bustling markets of Chandni Chowk and Connaught Place in the heart of New Delhi also offer a glimpse into everyday life in the city.

Reached from Delhi by rail or road, Agra is best known for being home to the instantly recognisable Taj Mahal, however, this historic Mughal city boasts a number of other grand sights including the Agra Fort and Itmad-ud-Daula, also commonly referred to as the 'Baby Taj'.

Jaipur, also known as the 'Pink City', is famous for its stunning architecture and characteristic hue. As one of the most important cities in Rajasthan there are a whole host of things to see in and around the city with highlights being the City Palace Complex, Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar observatory.
