A Journey on the Historic Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

Author: Lauren Curd

The world famous Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, first inaugurated in 1883, has become synonymous with elegance and luxury. Take a step back in time on this once in a lifetime trip laden with romance. Linking three of Europe’s most alluring cities – London, Paris and Venice – you will be taken on a remarkable overnight journey that will be remembered for a long time to come. It is no wonder why the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express has been central to so many classic stories throughout the years. From Dracula to James Bond, the Orient Express has all the appropriate glamour, rich history and distinguished extravagance to play a crucial role in many classic narratives, and you and your significant other can relish in the experience.

As you travel from London to Venice, or Venice to London, you will stay in private cabins which have been meticulously restored to their former glory. Each will function as both a daytime seating area with banquette sofa and a comfortable bedroom. You will board the British Pullman train at mid-morning at London Victoria. You will then travel through the Channel Tunnel, and once in France it’s time to get on the distinctive blue Venice Simplon-Orient-Express with its brass trimmings – the epitome in luxury travel. You will be greeted by the finely dressed, white-gloved attendants, who will be looking after you for the remainder of your journey.

As you wind through rolling hills carpeted with vineyards growing various types of grape, your every need will be attended to. You will be served an extravagant four course meal prepared by the train’s talented French chefs – silver service is obviously the only appropriate method of food service on this journey. What’s more, the experience is not complete unless you've dressed up. Befitting the occasion, it’s a must that you bring your smartest dinner wear (jeans are not allowed). Once you have feasted on the finest cuisine and wines, you can make your way to the Bar Car and indulge in cocktails made by trained mixologists. This is an ideal opportunity to relish this intimate experience and remark on the notable figures who have once shared the same space.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end as your journey concludes in Venice. However, all is not lost as you will now be in one of the most enchanting cities in the world. Extraordinarily built over water, there is a dazzling array of remarkable sites to visit. Though, simply being in the city is sight in itself. Take a trip on a gondola, visit the incredible Basilica di San Marco and see some unique Venetian art – Venice is truly like no other city. If you've got a big anniversary coming up or a special birthday, this is the trip for you. What better way to mark a grand occasion than by taking a loved one on the most captivating and memorable trips of your life. The train runs from March to November so book soon or plan your trip for the following year.
