Discovering new places to eat and drink when travelling is a highlight for most holidaymakers. Peculiar dining venues can draw in the gastronomic crowd, with enthusiastic foodies travelling far and wide to try out something new. We’ve searched high and low for wonderfully weird and wacky dining experiences across the globe and shortlisted our top 10 favourites here. Bon appetite!

1. Ithaa Undersea Restaurant – Maldives

Kicking off the list is a completely unique dining experience. ‘Under the sea’ takes on a whole new meaning in this beautiful restaurant as you sit five metres below the surface, with a 180-degree panoramic view of the surrounding aquatic life. Indulgences at the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island (twice voted ‘Best Hotel in the World’) include caviar, mid-morning cocktails and a six-course set dinner menu. Perfect for wedding celebrations and other special occasions.

2. Treepod Dining – Thailand

From the deep blue sea of the Maldives to the golden green treetops of Koh Kood – the location of a bamboo inspired restaurant. The Treepod Dining restaurant at the Soneva Kiri Resort not only gives you delicious food in a fabulous location, it takes it one step further by hoisting you into the foliage so you can enjoy the view of this largely unspoilt rainforest. Acrobat waiters’ zip-line from each pod, bringing your choice of gourmet delights and wine.

3. Sky Dining – Singapore

We had to include the Singapore Flyer simply because it incorporates fine dining with a favoured childhood amusement: a Ferris wheel. You sit in a spacious, comfortable capsule, with a butler on hand to attend to your every need. The wheel takes you on a magical ride as you slowly get higher and witness the splendour of Singapore’s Marina Bay. Private capsules are available for those romantic occasions such as proposals and anniversaries.

4. The Disaster Café – Lloret de Mar, Spain

It’s about time we shook things up – literally. If you fancy something slightly different to spectacular views, try the underground restaurant in this popular coastal region of Spain. As you eat, you’ll hear a distant rumble which slowly intensifies over time. Before you know it, you’ll be hit by a 7.8 earthquake! The owners set it up to offer a completely unique dining experience in a completely unique restaurant. The plates are heavier so as to remain on the table but keep hold of your drinks!

5. Baggers Rollercoaster Restaurant – Nuremberg, Germany

You’ve sat down at your table with no waiter or chef in sight. In front of lies a tablet with a menu sat patiently on the screen. You order and then wait. ZOOM! Your food will arrive via an intricate system of rails, right to your very table. There’s also a beer garden for those summer months.

6. SnowRestaurant – Kemi, Finland

A genuine feat and showcase of architectonic snow-work by local constructors, The SnowRestaurant of Kemi in Finland offers a truly bizarre dining experience. Every winter – coming up 20 years in 2015 – they reconstruct this fantastic venue. Within the SnowCastle estate, there is also a SnowChapel and SnowHotel. The temperature is maintained at -5 degrees Celsius so it is highly recommended you dress warmly to indulge in this beautifully crafted establishment.

7. Ngorongoro Crater Lodge – Tanzania

Fondly referred to as ‘The Game Lodge at the edge of the world’ – guests staying here enjoy meals in the lodge’s dramatic, uniquely-furnished dining room.  However its location is the main reason we’ve chosen to include Ngorongoro  Crater Lodge in this collection – perched on the rim of the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera; home to the highest density of wild game in Africa and the perfect choice for an unforgettable safari holiday.

8. Giraffe Manor – Nairobi, Kenya

Everyone loves giraffes. Did you know you can sample fantastic Kenyan cuisine while a friendly long-necked mammal pokes his head in to say hello? You can expect a visit from these beautiful creatures at breakfast and dinner during a stay at Giraffe Manor, where the wild residents are always keen to be hand fed. There is an observation structure available where you might just get a lovely giraffe kiss.

9. At.Mosphere Restaurant – Burj Khalifa, Dubai

At a height of over 442 metres and two levels below the top of the world’s tallest skyscrapers’ observation deck, this unique restaurant can offer you views like no other. The excitement begins before you’ve even taken a bite as a spectacular cantilevered staircase waits as you arrive. At night, it is transformed via a dynamic light show to propel you on a journey as you descend. The head chef has honed his pallet and skills in London and earned many restaurants Michelin stars during his time. For food of the highest quality, head here during your next holiday in Dubai.

10. The Airplane Restaurant – Colorado Springs

After bringing you weird and wonderful dining suggestions from all around the world, it seems fitting to conclude this compilation with a suggestion for eating top-class food in a plane. Based in a fully intact Boeing KC-97 tanker, this beast used to refuel aircraft throughout the world. The plane is just a part of the main complex and can seat 42 passengers of the 275 seat restaurant. While it doesn’t actually fly, it does take you on a flight through aviation history. Why not combine a visit to the Airplane Restaurant with a stay on an authentic horse ranch in Colorado for a truly wacky western holiday. Treat yourself to first class, you know you want to.
