The United States of America is one of the most popular destinations for all types of holidays; whether that’s a city break, a beach holiday, or a road trip, you’ll find that there are endless options in the US. One of the main reasons it’s so popular is, of course, the sheer number of important and historical landmarks that are dotted around the country.

The US has one of the most tumultuous histories of any country around the world. From the first invasion and the war against native Americans, to the slave trade, the Civil War, the Declaration of Independence and more, it’s no wonder every town has some sort of historically important tie with the past. Indeed, New York has the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France in 1886 that has become a symbol of freedom and democracy, in Boston you can find the Freedom Trail, which leads past locations where much of the American Revolution drama unfolded, while Philadelphia has Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed and George Washington was appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army.

With so many different landmarks to see, it can be difficult to plan a trip – how do you know what’s a definite, and what can be easily missed out? That’s why, here at Pettitts Travel, we’ve created an interactive map of the top 50 most Instagrammed landmarks across the US, to provide some insight to the most loved landmarks you have to visit while in the USA.

new york times squareIt may not come as a surprise that 6 out of the top 10 locations were all in New York City, including Times Square in the top spot with a massive 7,397,182 posts on Instagram, and Central Park coming in a close second with 5,207,596 posts.

The fact that New York is home to so many of the top Instagram spots makes sense, considering 26 million people visit Times Square every year; the city is the home of Broadway, and you can literally shop till you drop with most of the NYC stores being open nearly 24/7. Basically, NYC is pretty much regarded as the centre of the world. Plus, it has a very turbulent history, which is always fascinating to explore; from the sixties until the early nineties the

city was often deemed a place to avoid, until Mayor Rudolph Giuliani led a clean-up operation in the area which resulted in the “Disneyfication” of the Square.

Other attractions that placed highly included Walt Disney World in Orlando, which attracts an average of 52,964 visitors a day, as well as the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and Myrtle beach in South Carolina which has proven to be a massive tourist spot thanks to its subtropical climate and extensive beaches.

Surprisingly, there was quite a few impressive monuments that didn’t make it onto our list. The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, for example, only has 92,718 posts on Instagram despite being one of the most historically important landmarks in the whole country. Mount Rushmore, famous for the sculpture of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln that Gutzon Borglum carved into the face of the mountain, also only gained 234,726, just missing out on the top 50.

Methodology

In order to compile our list of the top 50 most Instagrammed locations in the US, we curated a list of 152 of the most iconic landmarks in the US that people should visit.

We then utilised Instagram’s geo-tag feature to identify how many posts on Instagram had been tagged at each location. We then ranked the locations based on this number, and identified the top 50 most popular.
