Escape the madness that the build-up to Christmas brings and treat yourself to a well-deserved getaway in December. Whether you fancy a few days of skiing on a snow-sure mountain or a week or two relaxing on the Caribbean’s sun-drenched shores, there are many fantastic value getaways available in the first three weeks in December. Naturally, prices for travel on peak season dates over Christmas and New Year soar, so if you wish to spend Christmas or New Year overseas, it is always advisable to book as early as possible.

Christmas Markets in Europe

Join in with the festivities with a visit to one of Europe’s best-loved Christmas market towns and cities and pick up some traditional gifts for your loved ones. Germany’s best loved festive fairs include Cologne, Munich and Berlin, but other European cities such as Prague, Vienna, Paris, Budapest, Tallinn and Krakow are becoming increasingly popular too and offer unique foods and handicrafts for visitors to experience. What better way to get in the festive spirit than with a few nights away? Plus, if you prefer not to fly, many of these locations can be reached by Eurostar and continental rail.

Snow Sure Ski Resorts

If you’re thinking of hitting the slopes this side of Christmas, you need to head to a high altitude resort to be sure of fresh powder. Val Thorens is Europe’s highest resort, with some peaks reaching over 3,000m, and usually opens a week or so earlier than the other high resorts of Tignes and Val d’Isere, whilst Hintertux in Austria and Saas Fee in Switzerland are home to some of Europe’s best glaciers for skiing.

Saint Lucia

The picture-perfect Caribbean island of Saint Lucia boasts blue skies galore and average temperatures of 29°C in December. With tropical golden sandy beaches, dramatic volcanic peaks posing inland and exotic flowers and birdlife abound, we defy you not to fall in love with the stunning scenery in Saint Lucia. For a charming, authentic Caribbean experience, look no further than East Winds Inn – a private, elegant resort offering superb beachfront dining. December is peak season in the Caribbean so we recommend booking early for winter 2015 to take advantage of the best prices!

India

December in the northern part of India sees daytime temperatures of around 24°C - ideal for sightseeing in the Golden Triangle area (Delhi, Agra and Jaipur) and searching for tigers in India’s national parks. We highly recommend incorporating a train journey into a tailor made holiday to India and if you fancy ending your adventure in India with some time on a beach, head south to the tropical shores of Goa where the mercury hovers at 27°C.

Lapland

Every child dreams of meeting the real Father Christmas in his home town, so why not make your little ones’ dreams come true with an unforgettable short break to Lapland. With Christmas fast-approaching, December is the most magical month to travel and the snow will certainly be falling this far north, creating the ideal winter playground for many outdoor pursuits including husky dog sledding and reindeer sleigh rides. A private meeting with Santa Claus himself is sure to be a true highlight - family holidays don’t get much more special than this!
