This tour offers a unique opportunity to spend Easter in Armenia. Renowned for its Christian heritage, Armenia was the first state to embrace Christianity in 310 AD. Little visited by tourists, Armenia has a long history, distinct culture and spectacular natural scenery. This tour takes advantage of Armenia's important role in the foundation of the Christian Church and offers a wonderful chance to experience the Easter celebrations in the country's many medieval churches and monasteries.

Itinerary: Easter in Armenia

Day 1 London to Yerevan (17th April 2019 / 8th April 2020)

Fly from London Gatwick with Ukraine International Airlines to Yerevan via Kiev. (N)

Day 2 Yerevan – visit Oshakan (18th April 2020 / 9th April 2020)

Morning at leisure. In the afternoon drive around the capital and explore the main sights of the city. Visit ‘Matenadaran’, one of the largest depositories of ancient manuscripts in the world and later leave Yerevan and drive to Oshakan church where the curator of the Armenian alphabet – Mesrop Mashtots – is buried. Here observe the foot washing ceremony and later enjoy dinner with a local family before returning to Yerevan to witness the ‘blowing of the candles’ at the main Cathedral. (B/L/D)

Day 3 Yerevan – visit Goshavank & Lake Sevan (19th April 2019 / 10th April 2020)

After breakfast, leave Yerevan and drive towards the mountain resort of Dilijan where you will have the opportunity to explore a preserved street of 19th Century houses and artisan studios. Continue onto Goshavank, a 13th Century Monastery, before ending your day at Lake Sevan to take part in the traditional Good Friday celebrations at the Cathedral. (B/L/D)

Day 4 Yerevan (20th April 2019 / 11th April 2020)

This morning visit the State History Museum in Yerevan and afterward continue to the Vernisage craft market which is famous for its variety of hand-made souvenirs. Later continue onto Echmiadzin, the religious centre of Armenia and where you will have the opportunity to observe the Easter Eve celebrations at the main Cathedral. (B/L/D)

Day 5 Yerevan – visit Geghard & Garni (21st April 2019 / 12th April 2020)

This morning leave your hotel and drive out to the Geghard Monastery – a UNESCO World Heritage site and where you will observe the Easter Day Lithurgy. Later, leave Geghard and continue onto Garni and a restored temple that dates from the 1st Century AD before returning to Yerevan in the afternoon. (B/L/D)

Day 6 Yerevan – visit Khor Virap & Noravank (22nd April 2019 / 13 April 2020)

Today drive south from Yerevan through the plains below Ararat to visit Khor Virap Monastery, which embodies the adoption of Christianity in Armenia in 301AD and is located at the foot of biblical Mt Ararat. Afterwards continue onto Noravank Monastery with its intricate carvings before returning to Yerevan and stopping en-route at the village of Areni to taste their famous dry red wine. (B/L/D)
