Places to visit in Brazil

The largest country in South America, Brazil is known for its colourful carnivals, palm-fringed beaches, exotic wildlife and samba but there is much more on offer across this diverse nation. In south east Brazil tour Rio de Janeiro and marvel at Christ the Redeemer, explore the colonial towns of Paraty, Tiradentes and Ouro Preto or relax on Buzio’s golden shores. From here travel south to visit the thundering Iguacu Falls that are shared with neighbouring Argentina. Depending on the time of year, visit the mighty Amazon or the Pantanal wetlands in Western Brazil both of which offer legendary wildlife viewing encounters. The north east of Brazil has some of the best beaches in the country, in particular Praia do Forte, Olinda and the coastline close to Fortaleza. Vibrant Salvador is brimming with Portuguese colonial architecture and a deep-rooted African heritage.

Q1 - When is the best time to visit Brazil?

A1 - Brazil is a large country and there is a noticeable variation in the climate between the different regions. Generally, however, the best time to visit Brazil is between November and early April when the weather is warm, sometimes hot, with little chance of rain and increasing humidity in more northerly areas. The winter months run from the end of May to September when temperatures are cooler and although there is a risk of showers there will still be clear days. In contrast, the tropical nature of the Amazon region results in hot, rainy and humid weather the year-round.

Q2 - Do I need a visa to travel to Brazil from the UK?

A2 - British citizens can enter Brazil for tourist purposes without the need to obtain a visa.

Q3 - How long is the flight to Brazil from the UK?

A3 - Direct flights between the UK and Brazil take around 12 hours. Flights that stop en-route have a duration closer to 15 hours.

Q4 - What currency is used in Brazil?

A4 - The currency of Brazil is the Brazilian Real, however, US Dollars are also widely accepted and easy to exchange locally. ATM machines are commonplace in larger cities but are less frequent in smaller towns. Credit cards are widely accepted but should not be solely relied upon with cash only accepted in smaller establishments and in markets.

Q5 - What language is spoken in Brazil?

A5 - The official language of Brazil is Portuguese. English is not widely spoken with the exception of areas visited by tourists.

Q6 - Are vaccinations required for travel to Brazil?

A6 - It is advised that you speak to your doctor about vaccinations before travelling to Brazil. It may be recommended that you receive a Yellow Fever vaccination and there is also a risk of malaria in certain parts of Brazil including the Amazon regions and Amapa.

Q7 - Should I book in advance to attend the Rio Carnival?

A7 - The Rio Carnival is one of the largest celebrations in the world and, if you wish to attend, it is recommended that you book at least nine months ahead with hotels and flights sold out months in advance. Carnival is celebrated throughout Brazil, however, the festivities are at their best in Rio de Janeiro with the evening balls and street parades a riot of colour and music.
