Bagan Holidays

Bagan is the location of one of the most important archaeological sites in Burma and Asia. Established during the latter half of the 9th century AD, over the following centuries a succession of rulers constructed thousands of Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries. Bagan came to prominence during the rule of King Anwrahta in 1044 and his various descendants continued his ambitious building scheme over subsequent generations. It has been estimated that originally there were over 10,000 religious structures and today although only 2,000 remain, the views and setting are remarkable. The temples are incredibly varied, large and small, intricate and plain, and highlights include the Ananda Temple which is one of the finest and best-preserved, the 12th century Shwezigon Pagoda, Nathlaung Kyaung, the last remaining Hindu temple, and the 900 year old Gubyaukgyi Temple.
