Canadian Rockies Holidays

Spanning the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, the Canadian Rockies are a vast area of dramatic high mountain scenery, rolling vineyards, turquoise lakes, pristine glaciers and an abundance of both animal and birdlife. This region is commonly accessed from either Vancouver or Calgary and, for many, this region is Canada at its most grand. Relax aboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train to enjoy fine panoramic views in comfort or hit the road to better explore the remote back country. A morning’s drive from Vancouver, the lush Okanagan Valley is home to some fine wineries whilst the national parks of Glacier and Banff are ideal for the more adventurous with hiking, climbing and canoeing amongst a whole host of available outdoor activities. Harder to access, UNESCO protected Kootenay National Park in British Columbia and Yoho National Park boast hot springs, waterfalls and pristine forest home to moose, elk and bear. No journey to the Canadian Rockies is complete without a journey on the spectacular Icefields Parkway where you can follow what is arguably Canada’s finest road to Jasper National Park, an internationally important ecosystem home to Canada’s largest population of grizzly bears.

Deciding the time of year to visit the Canadian Rockies depends on a variety of factors. Even during the most settled months it is not uncommon to experience multiple seasons in a day, however, it is generally considered that the summer months between June to September are the best time to visit the region. During this period temperatures are at their warmest, most snow at lower elevations would have melted, days are long and skies clear. The compromise though is that this is also the most popular time of year to travel to the region with parks and trails at their busiest. The majority of sights and outdoor activities are open and accessible from May to the middle of October and, consequently, these periods are also good times to visit. Spring is ideal for wildlife viewing and, as temperatures warm, is an ideal time to see waterfalls at their best. Autumn heralds the arrival of cooler weather and shorter days, however, the hiking is excellent and the fall scenery spectacular. Snowfall commences during November and lasts until early May making this a popular time for a range of winter activities.

What to do in Canadian Rockies

The Canadian portion of the Rocky Mountains straddles the border between the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta and extends south hundreds of miles into the United States. This is vast, rugged and remote region of stunning mountain scenery, pristine lakes, dramatic waterfalls, charming towns and wealth of animal and birdlife. Highlights include the famous national parks of Jasper and Banff with their huge mountains that are the setting for a range of outdoor activities including popular day hikes. Banff is also the gateway to the lesser visited parks of Kootenay and Yoho – both offer breathtaking scenery but also the opportunity to see wildlife including grizzly and black bear, moose and elk. The Canadian Rockies are also the location for a number of spectacular journeys, the best known of which is the Icefields Parkway which winds its way through some of the finest scenery, and bluest lakes, in Canada. It is also possible to experience the Canadian Rockies by rail with the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train the perfect place from which to experience the scenery in both comfort and style.
