Itinerary: Rocky Mountaineer Road and Rail Adventure

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international flight to Calgary. On arrival you will collect your hire car and drive to your accommodation. Take this afternoon to rest after your flight or head out into Calgary, a cosmopolitan city that offers a wide variety of activities and attractions. Visit the Heritage Park Historical Village, give bobsleighing a try at the Olympic Park or swing by the iconic Stampede Park. (N)

Today you will drive for around one and a half hours until you reach Banff. Founded in 1883, Banff was the first National Park in Canada and has since turned into a premier year-round destination. Spend this afternoon exploring the Cave and Basin National Historic Site and for panoramic views of the scenic Bow Valley, take a ride on the Banff Gondola. Take some time out this afternoon to relax in the hot mineral pools at the Upper Hot Springs. (N)

From your cosy mountain retreat you can venture out into this characteristic resort that has plenty of activities on offer. Today is devoted to the magnificent road trip from Banff to Jasper, the beautiful Icefields Parkway. The drive takes around 4 hours, but you will want to allow all day as you will stop off countless times for photo opportunities and admire natural wonders including Lake Louise, Bow Glacier, Peyto Lake and the Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls. Spend today exploring the loveable mountain village of Jasper. You might wish to pay a visit to Maligne Lake, one of the most photographed lakes before enjoying a circular walk of the Maligne Canyon. Later, you can visit the Columbia Ice Field or ride the Jasper SkyTram. (N)

Drop your car off in Jasper this morning (the rental office is within walking distance to the train station) before boarding the Rocky Mountaineer in SilverLeaf Service for your rail journey through the Rockies; past the magnificent Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, and tracing the path of the mighty Thompson River. Accommodation in Kamloops: Hotel will be allocated by the Rocky Mountaineer
It's back on board the Rocky Mountaineer this morning as you continue your journey from Kamloops to Vancouver. You will journey along the route of the Thompson River to Fraser Canyon, before reaching Fraser Valley for the final leg of your journey. You will arrive into Vancouver late this afternoon. Vancouver is a vibrant city with a captivating buzz, influencing mix of cultures and warm hospitality. At dusk, the sails of light at Canada Place come alive with colour, which is lovely to see before going for dinner nearby. (B/L)
Accommodation in Vancouver: Hyatt Regency Vancouver (or similar)
Today is free for you to explore the sights of Vancouver. You might choose to rent bikes and follow the cycle path around Stanley Park, spotting totem poles and enjoying the scenery, or visit the iconic Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, from where you can take in the outstanding views of the Capilano River. Alternatively, today would be the perfect opportunity to book a whale watching trip, a wonderful opportunity to see these great mammals in the wild. (N)
Accommodation in Vancouver: Hyatt Regency Vancouver (or similar)
Enjoy spending this morning in Vancouver at your leisure. Later on you will drive to Vancouver International Airport where you will drop off your hire car and board your international flight back to the UK. (N)
Today you will arrive back into the UK, where you will continue your journey home. (N)

Please note that during the Rocky Mountaineer train journey your overnight stay will be in a hotel in the destination the Rocky Mountaineer stops in at the end of Day One. Passengers travelling in SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf service will also have their luggage delivered to their hotel on this day. SilverLeaf Service on Rocky Mountaineer

The Rocky Mountaineer's new SilverLeaf service boasts a single-level dome, offering panoramic windows with 167% more viewing space than in the old RedLeaf Service. Passengers travelling in SilverLeaf will receive a welcome aboard toast, delicious hot breakfasts and lunches served to your seat, with lunch accompanied by a complimentary beer or glass of wine. Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and snacks are also included, along with live storytelling from the Rocky Mountaineer hosts. On your overnight stop, guests travelling in SilverLeaf Service will have their baggage delivered to their hotel.

GoldLeaf Service on Rocky Mountaineer

For that extra measure of luxury, take the GoldLeaf service. You will travel aboard an air-conditioned, full length Dome Coach, dine in elegant surroundings and take in the mountain breezes from a large observation platform. The onboard staff provide you with the highest level of service. They are gracious, energetic, pleasant and attentive, and will keep you informed of the history and sights along the way. You will enjoy fine cuisine amidst the elegant ambience of the GoldLeaf dining lounge. You won’t be able to resist the Chef’s creations which feature local delicacies such as BC salmon, accompanied by fresh fruit and vegetables. As your first day aboard the GoldLeaf Dome Coach draws to a close you will enjoy a comfortable night’s rest at a hotel in Kamloops or Quesnel, or alternatively, in Kamloops, enjoy the unique evening show.
