01892 515 966Capital of Tibet, sacred city and spiritual centre of the Tibetan world, Lhasa was founded over fourteen centuries ago when Buddhism was introduced to the region during the reign of King Sontsen Gampo. Today, it is more or less two cities – the modern Chinese part with modern architecture and wide tree lined streets and the old Tibetan city with its solid stone buildings – some over three storeys high – narrow bustling alleyways, orange clad monks and traditional markets. This high-altitude city is home to a treasure-trove of sights. The towering white-washed Potala Palace is breathtaking in its scale, the palaces, pavilions and chapels of Norbulingka are fascinating, the monasteries of Sera and Jokhang timeless whilst Drepung Monastery remains one of the largest of its kind in the world. We have over 25 years’ experience planning tailor-made holidays and tours to China.
