A vibrant and diverse city, Bogota is a city of contrasts – a place both stately and traditional, stylish and contemporary. Founded by the Spanish in the early 16th century, the city was captured by Simon Bolivar in 1819 and made capital of Great Colombia, and later Colombia, in 1830. Here explore La Candelaria, a historic neighbourhood in the heart of the city, and Plaza Bolivar where there are several important colonial and republican buildings including the Cathedral of Bogota. This is also the location for some of Colombia’s finest museums and art galleries including the Botero Museum and the astonishing Gold Museum which has one of the finest collections of pre-Colombian gold in the world.
