Cuba Holidays

Cuba is a vibrant and colourful country where, on the surface, it appears as if time has stood still. Located on the island’s north-western coast, capital Havana is an important regional centre. Founded by the Spanish during the 16th century, the cobbled streets, impressive, but crumbling, buildings and colonial-era plazas of Old Havana are captivating. Beyond the capital follow rural roads through pretty villages, tobacco and coffee plantations, idyllic white sandy beaches and secluded cayes, explore Fidel Castro’s pre-revolution hide-out or join local musicians in Santiago de Cuba. Experience authentic local life with a stay in a welcoming resident-owned casa particular, learn how to roll a Cuban cigar, hike the tropical Vinales valley and enjoy the galleries, restaurants and music halls of colourful Trinidad. No visit to Cuba is complete without a few days relaxation beside one of Cuba’s pristine palm-fringed Caribbean beaches.

Places to visit in Cuba

West of Havana in the Pinar del Rio region you will find a captivating mix of eco-villages, the verdant Vinales valley and popular diving spots. To the east of Havana is Varadero, a bustling beach resort. Central Cuba offers secluded cayes along the northern coastline that are worth the time it takes to get there as well as a selection of cultural hotspots including Santa Clara, the Bay of Pigs, Cienfuegos and Trinidad – a vibrant and characterful town. Camaguey connects central Cuba to the east, where you will find more rural experiences including Baracoa’s wild forests and the vast Sierra Maestra mountain range. With Afro-Caribbean influences, Santiago de Cuba is brimming with colonial heritage and musical greatness.

When to Visit Cuba

Much like its Caribbean neighbours, Cuba has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The driest months tend to be from December to May where you can expect balmy weather and sunny skies. Generally the rainy season runs from June to October and it will be increasingly warm during this period. It will not necessarily rain every day during these months but, when it does, the humidity will build up in the morning followed by rainy downpours for a few hours in the afternoon. The official hurricane season for the entire Caribbean runs from July to mid-November, with September and October being the most affected months in Cuba.

Cuba Holiday Review

I want to say thank you again for all of your help in arranging our dream honeymoon.

We LOVED every second of it and were desperate for it not to end. I can't quite believe we have ticked Cuba off our bucket list. Amazing!

Accommodation in Cuba

In Cuba there are two main types of accommodation – hotels and casa particulares. Although brimming with colonial charm, the majority of hotels are government owned and operated so the level of service and the quality of rooms, facilities and food served is often lower than you might expect for the price, especially when compared to European standards. The alternative, and mostly preferred option, is to stay in a casa particular which translates as ‘private house’. Casas are run by friendly locals and, on the whole, provide a high level of service, tasty home-cooked meals and benefit from central locations. They are found in nearly all towns and villages outside of Havana.
