Ecuador Holidays

A land of colourful indigenous people, Andean valleys and unique wildlife, Ecuador is a fascinating country and one which is an ideal introduction to South America. The UNESCO protected capital of Quito is a delightful city of narrow colonial streets, painted houses and grand conquistador churches whilst to the north is the equator and the vibrant market of Otavalo, largest in South America, with its excellent indigenous crafts. To the south Cotopaxi and the dramatic 'Avenue of the Volcanoes' provide a stunning backdrop and lead to the dense rainforests of the east. For many, however, the absorbing Galapagos Islands are the highlight of any tour. With many birds and animals uniquely adapted to this environment, follow in Darwin's footsteps and explore the diversity of these famous volcanic islands. Pettitts Travel specialises in providing quality, tailor-made holidays and tours to Ecuador.

Places to visit in Ecuador

Compact and easy to explore, mainland Ecuador is small in comparison to its South American neighbours yet still has contrasting terrains, ranging from the hot and tropical Amazon rainforest, rugged pacific coast and snow covered Andes mountains. Much of Quito is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ecuador’s capital has plenty of colonial charm. North of Quito is Mindo and the cloud forest, Otavalo and the northern highlands – both areas of outstanding natural scenery. South of Quito is the ‘Avenue of the Volcanoes’ including Cotopaxi, South America’s most famous active peak. West of Ecuador but still forming part of its territory, the Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago and a habitat to an array of unique wildlife and rare bird species. A popular way to explore the Galapagos Islands is by cruise as it enables you to observe the magnificent marine life that has evolved here.

When to Visit ecuador

Overall the wet season in Ecuador is from October to May, with June to September being the summer or dry season. However, despite covering a relatively small area – not much bigger than the UK – Ecuador has three quite distinct climate regions with variations largely due to differences in altitude. The Pacific Coast has a tropical climate with high levels of humidity. The mountainous Andean region sees little variation in temperature during the year, with warm days and cooler nights all year round. The lowlands region of Amazonian Ecuador has an equatorial climate with hot days and little fluctuation in rainfall through the year. Being situated well away from the mainland, the Galapagos have their own unique climate and in many ways there is no bad time to visit the islands. Generally, the best period to visit is from June to September or from December to January.
