Mumbai

One of the world’s great cities, Mumbai has grown from a small group of islands to India’s economic powerhouse and gateway to the world. Presented to King Charles II in 1661 as part of the dowry when he married Princess Catherine of Portugal, in the late 19th century it was the British who dismantled the old fort walls, began sea reclamation and laid the foundations of today's modern city. Still growing fast, Mumbai is a hypnotic combination of old and new, the chaotic and the peaceful. Visit the Gateway of India, built in 1911, and the Prince of Wales Museum, stroll through the historic Colaba district to admire the impressive Gothic Victorian architecture, view the city from Malabar Hill and visit the colourful Dhobi ghats where traditional laundryman collect, wash and return the city’s linen. We have over 25 years’ experience planning tailor-made holidays and tours to India.
