Kerala Holidays

Palmed-fringed beaches, misty highlands, lush tea plantations and charming homestays – our Kerala holidays showcase the very best of southern India. The charming town of Kochi, located close to India's tip, is the oldest European settlement in the country and the main entry point to the state. Historic port and centre of the spice trade, Kochi’s old fort area is a warren of narrow alleys and pretty merchant homes with a bustling waterfront complete with iconic Chinese fishing nets. South of the town explore the Keralan backwaters by private houseboat – it is also possible to spend a few nights here as well in one of the many welcoming homestays – or head up into the Western Ghats either taking the quaint Nilgiri Mountain Railway to Ooty, visiting the tea estates that surround Munnar or the spice plantations of Sultan’s Battery. No Kerala India holiday is complete without a beach stay, with Mararikulam, Kovalam and Neeleshwar all excellent options. As India travel specialists your Kerala holiday will be designed exactly with you in mind.

With a year-round tropical climate, working out the best time to visit Kerala can be trickier than other regions of India. Although temperatures remain relatively stable and the risk of a short sharp shower cannot be ruled out at any time of year, it is generally considered that the period between mid-October and February is the ideal time to visit Kerala. During these months, temperatures are a little cooler than at other times of year, the sea is calm and the chance of rain minimal making it an ideal time both for sightseeing and relaxing by the beach or pool. From March to the end of May temperatures, and increasingly the humidity, begin to build peaking just before the monsoon breaks. This is still an excellent time to visit Kerala and, in particular, the tea and coffee estates of the Western Ghats. The monsoon arrives early in Kerala and generally runs from June to mid-September. Rainfall is heavy and flooding not uncommon so travel is best avoided during this period, however, a holiday immediately following the monsoon is rewarded with lush vegetation and beautiful scenery.

What to do in Kerala

Located at the southern extremity of India, Kerala has long been a destination for international travel. Portuguese, Dutch and, latterly, British traders garnered, and also brought, great wealth to the region through the trade of spices, coffee and tea. Today Kerala continues to attract travellers, drawn by the beautiful beaches and historic towns, scenic backwaters and picturesque hill stations. Kochi is Kerala’s best known town, is usually the main entry point and an excellent base from which to explore the wider region. An historic spice centre, Kochi is a very attractive town with a charming waterfront, the oldest European church in India and a beautiful synagogue. To the south of Kochi are the serene landscapes of the backwaters with their traditional houseboats and excellent small homestays whilst, inland, are the forested hills of the Western Ghats and the pretty towns of Munnar and Sultan’s Battery. Kerala is also blessed with a beautiful coastline with the beaches of Mararikulam, Kovalam and Neeleshwar catering to all tastes.
