Kerala Backwaters

A watery network of twisting palm-lined canals interspersed with idyllic rural hamlets and verdant paddy fields, the backwaters are quintessential Kerala. Most experience this shifting landscape from the comfort of a private houseboat – the boats we use are small, authentic and in keeping with the character of the backwaters – but there are a number of excellent homestays and charming hotels too. Wherever you stay, the days will be spent leisurely exploring this special riverine landscape. Tiled and thatched cottages bright with hibiscus dot the embankments, cantilevered Chinese fishing nets hang over the water’s edge and, despite the tranquillity, life abounds with children swimming and playing in the water, women attending to their daily chores and men fishing from their canoes. The backwaters are a morning’s drive from Kochi and close to the beaches of the Malabar Coast.
