A watery network of twisting palm-lined canals interspersed with idyllic rural hamlets and verdant paddy fields, the backwaters are quintessential Kerala. Tiled and thatched cottages bright with hibiscus dot the embankments, cantilevered Chinese fishing nets hang over the water’s edge and, despite the tranquillity, life abounds with children swimming and playing in the water, women attending to their daily chores and men fishing from their canoes.
