Route: Kolkata – Kohima – Guwahati – Imphal – Guwahati – Darjeeling – Kolkata

For many the North East of India is synonymous with World War II and the battles of Kohima and Imphal which turned the tide of war in Asia. Combining both locations this itinerary begin in Kolkata, former capital of the Raj, before flying to Kohima where visits will be made to the Kohima War Cemetery and local villages. From here the itinerary continues to Imphal to visit the Indian National Army Museum in Moirang and the Imphal War Cemetery before ending in the old Raj hill station of Darjeeling where many soldiers also went for some well earned R&R.

Day 1 Depart UK

Today depart the UK on the Emirates flight to Dubai. (N)

Day 2 Arrive Kolkata

Arrive into Dubai and connect onto the Emirates flight to the heart of Eastern India, Kolkata. One of the country's most forward-thinking cities, it is also known for its magnificent architectural landmarks including the Victoria Memorial and Imperial Museum. Relax at your hotel during the afternoon as you acclimatise. (N)

Day 3 Kolkata

Today you have a full day of sightseeing in Kolkata with your guide. Places of interest include the silver-domed General Post Office, South Park Cemetery, the Writers Building and St John's Church which has a memorial to the city's founder Job Charnock. In the afternoon visit the white marble Victoria Memorial which homes a treasure trove of Raj relics. End the day at the magnificent Indian Museum, the largest museum in the country which was established in 1814. (B)

Day 4 Kolkata to Dimapur – by air / Dimapur to Kohima – 80kms

This morning return to Kolkata Airport for your onward flight to Dimapur. On your arrival you will be met and begin the drive to Kohima stopping en-route to visit the medieval remain of the Kachari kingdom. The state capital of Nagaland, Kohima is situated at an altitude of 1,444 metres and is a beautiful town with wide panoramic views of the surrounding area. (B/D)

Day 5 Kohima

Today visit the Kohima War Cemetery in honour of those killed during Battle of Kohima and World War II. There are 1,420 soldiers buried here and the cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Later continue to the State Museum which house a rare collection of artefacts from each of the Naga tribes, before ending the day in the 700 year old Angami villages of Khonoma. (B/L/D)

Day 6 Kohima

Start the day at the Kohima War Museum before visiting the local Angami villages of Jakhama and Kigwema. In the afternoon visit the Cathedral Church of Kohima built, in part, by contributions of those who fought in the Battle of Kohima and their families. The cathedral dominates the town and is thought to be the largest in Asia. (B/L/D)

Day 7 Kohima to Guwahati – 435kms

Today is a long drive from Kohima to Guwahati. Holding a commanding location on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, the city of Guwahati is a gateway to the North East of India and the commercial, cultural and political centre of the entire region. (B/L/D)

Day 8 Guwahati to Imphal – by air

This morning transfer to Guwahati Airport in good time to catch your onward flight to Imphal where on arrival you will visit the Govindaji Temple. (B/L/D)

Day 9 Imphal

Today visit the Kangla Fort, Kangla Museum, local market, State Museum and the Imphal War Cemetery. There are 1,600 British and Indian soldiers are buried here who fought in World War II and at the Battle of Imphal. (B/L/D)

Day 10 Imphal

After breakfast travel outside of Imphal to visit the Japanese War Memorial, Loktak Lake and Sendra Island. Later continue to the town of Moirang, once the headquarters of the Indian National Army and where it is possible to visit the interesting INA Museum. End the day at the Keibul Lamjao National Park, a refuge for the endangered eld's deer. (B/L/D)

Day 11 Imphal to Guwahati – by air

Return to Imphal Airport and fly back to Guwahati where you will stay overnight. (B/L/D)

Day 12 Guwahati to Bagdogra – by air / Bagdogra to Darjeeling – 90kms

After breakfast transfer back to Guwahati Airport to catch your onward flight to Bagdogra. On your arrival you will be met and transferred to the old Raj hill station of Darjeeling. Surrounded by tea plantations, Darjeeling is a fascinating town with a distinctive mix of Buddhist and colonial architecture. (B/L/D)

Day 13 Darjeeling

Before sunrise visit the impressive Tiger Hill for spectacular views over the mountainous vista. Later you may wish to visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the Himalayan Zoo. Enjoy a ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway to visit the Yiga Choling Monastery at Ghoom in the afternoon. (B/L/D)

Day 16 Kolkata to the UK
