Northern India Holidays

Geographically and culturally diverse, northern India is a vast region dissected by the holy Ganges River stretching from the high altitude borderlands of Ladakh to the rolling plains of Madhya and Uttar Pradesh. This is a land of desert and mountain, ancient religious centres and fine Mughal architecture. The Himalayas define the northern limits of India and encompass former hill-stations, the Dalai Lama's current residence in Dharamsala, the extraordinary Golden Temple of Amritsar and the weather-beaten terrain of Buddhist Ladakh. Also within reach of Delhi is Corbett National Park and lakes and gardens of Kashmir. To the south-west, in Gujarat, sun-bleached desert cities lay adjacent to rural tribal communities and Sasan Gir – last abode of the Asiatic lion. No stay in northern India is complete without a visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra, the holy city of Varanasi on the sacred Ganges or the fabulous UNESCO temples at Khajuraho. All of our holidays and tailor-made tours to northern India are unique and fully personalised.

The best time to visit northern India is between October and March, however, the size of the region means that there is a considerable variation in climate. It is generally considered that the capital Delhi, Agra, Amritsar, Lucknow, Varanasi, Khajuraho and the State of Gujarat are at their best over the winter months with little chance of rain and plenty of sun. Temperatures are comfortable but, during December and January, it can be cold in the morning and evening. The Himalayan foothills, particularly the hill station of Shimla, can be very cold in winter. Visit during autumn for crystal-clear skies and fabulous mountain views or in spring when wildflowers and rhododendron are in full bloom. The pre-monsoon period, when temperatures begin to rise, is the perfect time of year for wildlife viewing in Corbett National Park as there is less foliage to obscure sightings. In remote Ladakh, which for much of the year remains snow-bound, the months of June, July and August are the ideal time to visit with the summer thaw ensuring dry days, clear skies and warmer temperatures.

What to do in Northern India

From high mountain scenery, arid desert and impenetrable lowland jungle to pulsating cities, historic hill-stations and prominent religious centres, northern India is a region of incredible diversity and interest. Explore vibrant Delhi, capital of the Indian Republic, and its plethora of historic sites. Delhi is an ideal starting point for travel to much of northern India – head south to Agra and the Taj Mahal, then on into Madhya Pradesh to see the fort at Gwalior, the cenotaphs of Orchha and the spectacular temples in Khajuraho which can be combined with the holy pilgrimage city of Varanasi. Spend time in Gujarat with its historic cities, temple complexes and fascinating tribal villages or make your way north to visit Corbett National Park, the exquisite Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Tibetan enclave of Dharamsala or the charming town of Shimla to ride its historic hill railway. During the summer months it is also possible to travel overland from Shimla via Manali to the Ladakhi town of Leh using one of the highest motorable roads in the world.
