Call of the Jungle - The Wildlife of Northern India

Route: Delhi – Corbett – Garmukteshwar – Agra – Bandhavgarh – Kanha – Mumbai

India is synonymous with wildlife and the country is blessed with numerous excellent reserves. This itinerary combines three of the best with a break en-route in Agra to visit the wonderful Taj Mahal. Starting in Delhi in northern India, travel by road to Corbett National Park which is named after the legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. From here travel south via Garmukteshwar and Agra to the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh for stays in Bandhavgarh and Kanha national parks, both of which are rich in birdlife and home to tiger, leopard, sambar, chital, gaur and nilgai.

Day 1 Depart UK

Today depart the UK on the British Airways flight to Delhi. (N)

Day 2 Arrive Delhi

As India's capital, Delhi is a city of two halves. Old Delhi is an historic district of majestic forts, grand mosques and antique monuments. New Delhi, with its government buildings, tree-lined avenues and white-washed bungalows was purpose-built in the 1930s by the British. Even today New Delhi remains the epicentre of Indian political power. (N)

Day 3 Delhi to Corbett – 270kms

Early this morning travel by road to Corbett National Park where you will stay for the next three nights. Established in 1935, Corbett is India’s oldest wildlife sanctuary which was named after the hunter-turned-conservationist and author Jim Corbett. In the afternoon there will be an opportunity for bird watching or a guided walk to explore the park's flora and fauna. (B/L/D)

Days 4 - 5 Corbett National Park

Bordered by the Himalayan foothills and located on the banks of the Ramganga River, Corbett supports a remarkable variety of wildlife including tiger and leopard and elephant and bear, and is home to an astonishing 600 species of birds. Viewing at Corbett is undertaken by shared jeep and over the next two days visit the park at sunrise and sunset to discover the amazing array of wildlife. (B/L/D)

Day 6 Corbett to Garmukteshwar – 160kms

Leaving Corbett, continue by road southwest to Garmukteshwar, an important Hindu town near the Ganges. (B)

Day 7 Garmukteshwar to Agra via Sikandra – 180kms

This morning leave Garmukteshwar and travel on towards Agra, stopping on the way at Sikandra, site of Akbar’s tomb. Continue to Agra, home to three wonderful structures – Agra Fort, the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daula and the iconic Taj Mahal. (B)

Day 8 Agra to Katni – by train

Agra was once one of the world’s majestic cities. No stay in Agra is complete without a visit to the Taj Mahal. Built by Shah Jahan as a memorial to his wife Mumtaz, the Taj Mahal is arguably the greatest monument to love. You will also visit today visit the imposing Agra Fort, established by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565, and the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daula. Later transfer to Agra Railway Station for the overnight train to Katni. (B)

Day 9 Arrive Katni/ Katni to Bandhavgarh – 100kms

Arrive in to Katni in the morning where you will be met and driven to Bandhavgarh National Park. Set within the heart of the Vindhyachal mountain range, Bandhavgarh is predominately home to sal and mixed forest, as well as grasslands and streams. (L/D)

Days 10 - 11 Bandhavgarh National Park

Over the next two days explore Bandhavgarh in the company of an expert naturalist. The reserve has one of the highest densities of tiger, leopard, sloth bear, sambar, chital and barking deer in India. Bandhavgarh is also home to rich and varied birdlife. (B/L/D)

Day 12 Bandhavgarh to Kanha – 245kms

Leaving Bandhavgarh drive south through Kipling country to Kanha National Park. One of India’s most beautiful reserves, Kanha’s is known for its wide range of wildlife and birdlife which you can see during your visit. (B/L/D)

Days 13 & 14 Kanha National Park

Over the next two days explore the park on morning and evening safaris. Kanha is home to tiger, bison, leopard, jackal, wild boar, sambar, Indian swamp deer and blackbuck as well as a rich variety of birdlife. (B/L/D)

Day 15 Kanha to Nagpur – 260kms/ Nagpur to Mumbai – by air

Today transfer to Nagpur Airport in good time to catch the late afternoon flight to Mumbai where you will stay overnight close to the international airport. One of the world’s great cities, Mumbai has grown from a small group of islands to India’s economic powerhouse and gateway to the world. Still growing fast, Mumbai is a combination of old and new, the chaotic and the peaceful, which draws visitors back time again to what is a most vibrant, bustling and human of cities. (B)

Day 16 Depart Mumbai
