Rajasthan Holidays

An area of unending variety and diversity forged after Indian independence from a kaleidoscope of ancient princely states, Rajasthan is a regal region that typifies how most envision India. Rajasthan is blessed with an unrivalled collection of architectural riches – grand monuments, magnificent forts, delicate temples and opulent palaces that are without equal throughout the rest of the subcontinent. Parts of rural Rajasthan have little-changed over the centuries. Here, women draped in exquisite saris and dignified men with magnificent moustaches and colourful turbans go about their daily lives whilst the busy atmospheric cities bustle with energy and optimism. In the remote areas, characterised by epic landscapes, mighty deserts and wildlife reserves it is still possible to escape the well-trodden tourist trails on a Rajasthan tour and, in the process, discover charming country towns, beautiful ancestral homes and forested tiger reserves.

Landlocked and separated from the coast by the neighbouring state of Gujarat, the climate of Rajasthan is predominately dry for most of the year with low levels of humidity punctuated by occasional bursts of rainfall during the monsoon season. The period between the months of October and March is considered to be the best time to visit Rajasthan with days generally sunny and rarely exceeding 30°C but nights cooler with temperatures dropping once the sun sets. A largely desert state, from April onwards to the breaking of the monsoon in June temperatures peak with it not unknown for them to reach 45°C in the hottest part of the day. Although excursions at this time of year are arranged to avoid the midday heat, these months are the ideal time for wildlife viewing with animals, including tiger, more easily seen as they come out in search of water. The monsoon brings heavy, yet sporadic, rainfall with short sharp showers that also have the benefit of lowering temperatures. Despite the rain, this is an excellent time of year to visit Rajasthan with fewer tourists, competitive prices and lusher landscapes.

What to do in Rajasthan

Rajasthan is located in the west of India and easily accessible from the nation’s capital Delhi. Highlights of a Rajasthan tailor-made holiday include Jaipur and the superb City Palace complex, the ‘blue city’ of Jodhpur dominated by the magnificent Meherangarh Fort, the atmospheric lake city of Udaipur and the remote desert city of Jaisalmer which is located close to the state’s far western boundary. Head to the countryside to experience quintessential Rajasthani hospitality, attend the chaotic annual livestock fair at Pushkar or stay in atmospheric palaces and forts – many of which are still family owned. For wildlife lovers, the Project Tiger reserve at Ranthambore is a must and nearby Bharatpur National Park is home to many hundred species of bird. As India tour specialists Pettitts Travel are experts in tailor made travel to India and can create a luxury Rajasthan holiday unique to you.
