An oasis town and historic trading centre on the old caravan routes of central Asia, Bikaner retains the feel of a desert outpost. Founded during the 15th century and capital of the wider princely state, Bikaner developed into an important, forward-thinking city and is home to a fine collection of medieval buildings. The 16th century Junagarh Fort in the heart of the city is one of the grandest citadels in Rajasthan and a visit to this imposing example of Rajput military architecture is recommended. The interior of the fort is a wonderfully preserved collection of royal palaces, apartments, courtyards and temples and there is also an interesting museum of manuscripts, paintings and jewellery. Away from the fort, explore the bazaars, havelis and markets of the old walled city with the beautiful Rampuria Haveli a particular highlight.
