Founded during the 15th century and capital of the wider princely state, Bikaner developed into an important, forward-thinking city and is home to a fine collection of medieval buildings. The 16th century Junagarh Fort in the heart of the city is one of the grandest citadels in Rajasthan and a visit to this imposing example of Rajput military architecture is recommended. The interior of the fort is a wonderfully preserved collection of royal palaces, apartments, courtyards and temples and there is also an interesting museum of manuscripts, paintings and jewellery.
