Planned by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1727, Jaipur is a vibrant city of bazaars, palaces, fine havelis and spectacular forts. Current capital of Rajasthan, this famous ‘pink city’ was very much the product of Jai Singh’s design and he was able to utilise his love of mathematics, science and astrology to plan the city on a distinctive grid based on Hindu representations of the universe. There is plenty to see and do in Jaipur. Head outside the city to dramatically located Amber Fort – a 700 year old Rajput fortress of palaces, gardens and temples – then explore the city visiting the superb City Palace complex which is home to the beautiful Peacock Gate, a vast armoury and the famous Hawa Mahal, or ‘Palace of the Winds’. Also of interest is the Jantar Mantar – the single largest stone observatory in the world.
