Dominated by the astonishing Meherangarh Fort, one of India’s most spectacular citadels, Jodhpur was originally settled in the late 15th century and developed rapidly, profiting due to its position alongside important trading route and from the sale of opium, copper, silk, sandalwood and dates. A highlight of any visit is the Meherangarh Fort which stands high above the old town. Protected by a snaking six mile crenelated wall, this royal fort houses palaces, temples, paintings and an excellent museum. There are also spectacular views from the ramparts. The bustling blue-washed old city is best explored on foot and wander the atmospheric streets, visit colourful bazaars and temples, meet craftsmen and shop for locally made textiles, jewellery, leather items and lacquerware.
