Chennai

Chennai is the fourth largest city in India and a leading cultural and economic centre. Capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai was originally settled by Armenian and Portuguese traders however the city flourished with the arrival of the British in the 17th century ultimately developing into one of the major maritime trading cities of its time. Despite Kolkata’s eventual usurpation of Chennai as the main centre of British administration it never truly diminished in importance and is to this day a principle port on the east coast and a major gateway to the south. Visit Fort St George, the original trading centre of the East India Company which also houses St Mary’s Church, the first English church in India, San Thome Basilica, the historic and chaotic district of Georgetown and the Kapaleeswarar Temple which is dedicated to Shiva and features a 40m high gopuram.
