The Wildlife of Southern India

Southern Karnataka and northern Kerala form part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest protected area in southern India. Within this reserve are Nagarhole and Bandipur national parks – arguably the region’s finest reserves which support a range of wildlife including wild elephant, tiger, leopard, sloth bear and hundreds of different bird species. This journey combines Nagarhole and Bandipur with the charming provincial city of Mysore before ending with a stay on a working coffee plantation where over 100 different species of bird have been recorded.

Route: Bangalore – Mysore – Nagarhole – Bandipur National Park – Sultan’s Battery – Bangalore

Itinerary Highlights

Nagarhole National Park is southern India’s preeminent nature reserve. Established over 60 years ago, the park is noted for its leopard population and excellent birdwatching.

Bandipur is a beautiful national park of woodland and thick tropical forest. This habitat supports healthy populations of wild elephant as well as numerous reptile species.

Located high in the Western Ghats, the small country settlement of Sultan’s Battery offers superb birdwatching with over 100 different species, some of them rare, documented.

Today depart the UK on the British Airways non-stop flight to Bangalore. (N)

Arrive into Bangalore where you will be met and driven to pretty Mysore for a three night stay. In the afternoon take a two hour specialist heritage walk in the city which starts at the Town Hall, visits the Devaraja Market and ends at the Jagan Mohan Palace. During the walk the guide will share various stories from Mysore's past and there will also be a chance to taste ‘Mysore Pak’, the city's famous sweet. (N)

Over the next two days explore Mysore. Visit Chamundi Hill, site of the Chamundeswari Temple and Nandi Bull as well as the vast City Palace which was re-built by Henry Irwin during 1897 in an Indo-Saracenic style. The palace contains extraordinary wall paintings, stained glass work and inlaid doors. Also leave the city to visit the temple complex at Somnathpur and the exquisite Keshava Vishnu temple, one of the finest in India, as well as Srirangapatnam where Tipu Sultan was killed in battle against an East India Company army including Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington. This morning leave Mysore and drive to Nagarhole National Park. Considered southern India's finest reserve, Nagarhole is home to tiger, bison, elephant, leopard, flying squirrel and sloth bear as well as over 250 different species of bird and waterfowl. (B/D)

Over the next two days explore Nagarhole with early morning and evening game safaris in the company of an expert naturalist. Established in 1955, and originally part of the Maharaja’s private estate, Nagarhole is a beautiful reserve with a range of different habitats and environments. Largely consisting of lush deciduous forest, there are also bamboo groves and large areas of swampland that mostly line the Kabini River. (B/L/D)

After breakfast leave Nagarhole and drive south to Bandipur National Park. Adjoining Nagarhole National Park, Bandipur forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve – the largest protected area in southern India. Bandipur has a range of habitats and consists of a mixture of deciduous woodland, subtropical forest and scrubland. (B/L/D)

Today explore Bandipur with a local naturalist. Bandipur is one of the best places in Asia to see wild elephants and there are also good populations of gaur, chital, sambar and four-horned antelope. Both tiger and leopard are present in the reserve but sightings are rare. Bandipur also supports a good variety of birdlife, numerous butterfly species and a range of reptile life including cobra, python, monitor lizard, chameleon and mugger crocodile. (B/L/D)

Leaving Bandipur this morning drive to Sultan's Battery, a small town in the Western Ghats and the centre of a region which produces some of India's finest coffee, cardamom and vanilla. Stay for three nights at charming Amaryllis - a delightful homestay with spectacular views. Alternatively upgrade to Tranquil, a secluded 70 year old plantation bungalow on the Kuppamudi Coffee Estate. (B/L/D)

Over the next two days enjoy Amaryllis and the surrounding local area. Swim in the beautiful pool or relax with a good book. The bird-watching here is excellent and so far 127 different species have been recorded including hoopoe, drongo, hornbill, kingfisher and the magnificent crested serpent hawk. (B/L/D)

Today leave Sultan’s Battery and return by road to Bangalore. Stay overnight near to the city’s international airport. (B)
