On this exciting seventeen day tour, travel from cosmopolitan Kuala Lumpur right into the depths of the Malaysian jungle. Beginning in Sarawak, 'land of the hornbill', visit the colourful market town of Serian and spend two nights explore Batang Ai National Park. From here travel north to Sabah, a paradise for the wildlife enthusiasts to discover the spectacular Kinabalu National Park and the rainforests of the Danum Valley. There will also be an opportunity to visit the Orangutan sanctuary at Sepilok, bringing you a face-to-face with the mighty 'man of the forest'. Please note that visits to Sepilok and Sukau will be arranged on a small group tour basis.

Itinerary Highlights

Kuala Lumpur is a city of contrasts and a fascinating place to experience modern Malaysian city life. Highlights include the excellent National Museum and an ascent of KL Tower.

Batang Ai National Park in Sarawak, Borneo consists of tropical rainforest and support many protected and rare animals, such as orang-utan, gibbon, slow loris, sun bear and hornbill.

Beautiful Kinabalu National Park is situated at 1,600 metres above sea level. Dominated by Mount Kinabalu, the reserve supports an extraordinary diversity of flora, fauna and birdlife.

Today depart the UK on the British Airways flight non-stop to Kuala Lumpur. (N)
Arrive in Kuala Lumpur where you will be met and transferred to your accommodation. Capital of Malaysia, in little over a century and half Kuala Lumpur has developed from a small, rural trading outpost into one of the most modern and cosmopolitan cities in South East Asia. (N)

Today explore Kuala Lumpur with your guide. The colonial centre of the city is particularly interesting and see the hundred year old Masjid Jamek, Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Merdeka Square. Also see the King’s Palace and excellent National Museum, then explore the Lake Gardens on foot where the National Monument has good views of the Malaysian parliament building. End the day by ascending KL Tower for a spectacular panoramic view of the city. (B)

This morning transfer to Kuala Lumpur airport in good time to catch the flight to Kuching. This afternoon visit Fort Margarita, which was built by Raja Charles Brooke in the 1870s, then head to the Sarawak Museum. Originally opened in 1891, the museum houses a fine collection predominately centred on the history and culture of Sarawak’s indigenous peoples. (B)

After breakfast leave Kuching and drive to the colourful market town of Serian and, following lunch at Lachau bazaar, take a scenic longboat ride up the Lemanak River. Visit a typical longhouse village before returning downriver to the jetty. From here continue your journey by road and boat to the Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. Established as a national park in 1991, Batang Ai is located in the heart of Sarawak and is only accessible by boat. (B/L)

Today experience Batang Ai with your guide and explore the tropical rainforest on foot. Home to the indigenous Iban, the pristine rainforest is home to wild orang-utan, gibbon, clouded leopard, civet cat, sun bear, porcupine, langur, macaques and slow loris. The reserve also supports over thirteen species of snakes and a wide array of birdlife including five species of hornbill. (B/L)

This morning leave Batang Ai National Park and return to Kuching. The remainder of the day will be at leisure. (B/L)

This morning transfer to Kuching Airport and fly to Kota Kinabalu. Kota Kinabalu is the gateway to the spectacular Kinabalu National Park. Dominated by the 4000m peak of Mt Kinabalu, the reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Malaysia’s oldest protected areas. (B)

Today visit Kinabalu National Park which is one of the most biologically diverse areas on earth. With four different climatic zones and forest environments ranging from tropical to coniferous, the national park supports an extraordinary variety of plants and animals. Over 1000 species of orchid have been recorded here and the park is also home to rafflesia – the world’s largest flower – and carnivorous pitcher plants. Kinabalu National Park also supports orang-utan, lemur, wild pig, tarsier and slow loris as well as over 250 different species of bird. (B/L)

This morning return to Kota Kinabalu Airport and fly to Sandakan. On arrival proceed to the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre which was founded in 1964 to look after orphan orang-utans. After visiting the centre it is a two hour journey by ferry along the Kinabatangan River to your hotel for the night which offers the opportunity to view birds and wildlife in their mangrove, wetland and rainforest habitat. After breakfast leave Sukau and drive to Lahad Datu – the gateway to the Danum Valley. The Danum Valley Conservation Area, located in the far north east of Sabah, is a remote area of undisturbed and protected lowland tropical rainforest. With no permanent human settlement the area is unique and supports an almost unrivalled diversity of tropical plants and animals. (B/L/D)

Today explore the Danum Valley. The Borneo Rainforest Lodge provide all activities and options include jungle walks, bird-watching and night safaris. There is also a canopy walkway. The conversation area is home to orang-utan, gibbon, mouse-deer, tarsier and clouded leopard. There have also been reports of Bornean rhinoceros and Borneo pygmy elephant – both of which are extremely rare. Over 250 species of bird have also been recorded. (B/L/D)
