Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu is the modern capital of the state of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo.

Developed by the British at the end of the 19th century, Kota Kinabalu started life as a trading outpost and saw rapid development in the decades that followed the Second World War. Large swathes of the land used for new building projects has been reclaimed from the sea and today this growing town lines the coast with the jungle-clad hills of the interior providing a backdrop. In the town, visit the Masjid Sabah – the second largest in the country – and the Sabah State Museum which focuses on Sabah’s ethnography, natural history, textiles and archaeology. Kota Kinabalu is the main entry point to northern Borneo and has regular direct flights to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and most of the main regional Asian cities.
